W163 appreciation post as we celebrate the newly face lifted W167 GLE. The W163 was a revolutionary SUV that not only created a category, but changed the automotive landscape as we know it. Not only did it revolutionize German automobile manufacturing in the United States, but it developed a new meaning and expectation as to what would be expected of a family vehicle. Safety, efficiency, and car-like road composure were all very high on the list of requirements. Looking back, the W163 seemed to be the perfectly proportioned SUV with body on frame construction and over-engineered off road capabilities, making them a sweet spot in today’s collector car landscape. This 1973 450SEL is a special ordered early W116 with a column shifter to make room for the 8-Track player in the center console. The car was originally delivered on the East Coast and drove all over for majority of its life with the original owners Colonel Bennie Jew and his wife Cora. This W116 has had a pretty incredible history, owned by three MBCA members, all of which who have been very active in the club. The car was always at every MBCA fashion island event since 1973 all the way through the early 90s. The vehicle has also been featured in The Star Magazine circa 2022, the cover of Classic Mercedes magazine, and was the feature car for Mercedes Freude under Belinda Clontz Sarooei- LA ownership, and now the vehicle is in the hands of long term member Logan Trembley who has been an active MBCA member since high school, and is displaying the car at Audrain Concours & Motor Week in the 30 under 30 category. We love seeing cars being kept within the MBCA community, and stories like this ones are what make it all worth it. Keep an eye out for this special treasure trove of a W116 this weekend!

How cool is it when your Mercedes-Benz dealer becomes an anchor point for 140 years of heritage, right there on the showroom floor? Mercedes-Benz Vancouver turned its space into a hub to anchor the community together, where the cars that built the legend sit alongside the ones carrying it forward. A huge congratulations to the team at Mercedes-Benz Vancouver and to our Canadian MBCA members in British Columbia for bringing it all together.
