National Alliance on Mental Illness - Colorado Springs (NAMI - CS)

National Alliance on Mental Illness - Colorado Springs (NAMI - CS) We educate, support and advocate for people and families navigating mental health conditions. This program area is expanding during COVID-19.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is America’s largest grassroots organization improving the lives of people with mental illness through education, support and advocacy. NAMI Colorado Springs has been the local affiliate since 1983, drawing upon nationally developed curricula and educational materials while operating as an independent 501c3. Since 2012, NAMI Colorado Springs’ budget has grow

n fivefold and its programs have quadrupled. Peer-led and no-cost to the community, these programs emphasize that mental health disorders are biologically based, treatable and common — striking 1 in 5 people annually. They divide into three categories:

Family programming: Family-to-Family, Basics and Family Support Groups serve family members of individuals who struggle with mental illness, covering brain physiology, advocacy strategies and self-care. Peer programming: Peer-to-Peer and Connection Support Groups provide strategies and support to adults seeking wellness in response to personal mental health challenges. Community programming: These offerings break down stigma and educate audiences ranging from high school students (Below the Surface) to law enforcement (Crisis Intervention Team training). NAMI also offers resource and referral services out of its southeast Colorado Springs office, with volunteers answering more than 2,000 calls in 2019.

With the Casa Verde Common House literally overflowing with people, yesterday's gathering was poignant and beautiful. Thanks to all of those who attended and paid tribute to Julie Foster.

A “gem of a woman,” as some describe Julie Foster, had the foresight decades ago to realize the importance of mental health and in her passing leaves behind gratitude and praise for her prescient work in several facets of the community. Foster, co-founder of the Colorado Springs affiliate of...

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and what better way to start it off than with another successful gathering of the Pikes Peak Rising Business Collective?

The PPRBC met up at ChangeLine for a Speed Dating event where business leaders rotated tables every 10 minutes, spending time in small groups with local nonprofits to learn about the work they do and how they can lend their support. This session was part of a monthly Lunch & Learn facilitated by the Su***de Prevention Collaborative to support mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Attendees included National Alliance on Mental Illness - Colorado Springs (NAMI - CS), Su***de Prevention Partnership, Status: Code 4, Inc.., Silver Key Senior Services, and Fishing the Good Fight.

We're so grateful to open our doors to these meaningful events. Every step toward improving mental health at work is a step toward a healthier, more connected region.

May is Mental Health Awareness month. Here at NAMI Colorado Springs, we want to celebrate every brave step each person takes on the path to healing. And healing often starts with sharing your story: with a trusted friend, a parent, or a peer support group. This month, we hope you'll join us in sharing stories of hope and healing, and help us break the stigma of mental illness. www.namicoloradosprings.org/share

Major thanks to both schools. Awesome to be a part of this!

Last week kept us busy in the best way as we spent time at The Bijou School and Sand Creek High School presenting “What’s On Your Mind?”. A big thank you to The Bijou School for having us back and to Sand Creek High School for inviting us in for two days. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to work with your students and continue building these partnerships.

The students were engaged, thoughtful, and brought great energy to each session, which made our time even more meaningful. Also keeping it real, we were so busy presenting that we only managed to take one picture, but we promise it was a great three days all around.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with both schools and coming back again soon 💛🧡

For the last few years, Educating Children of Color has invited NAMI to organize mental health conversations for local young people. It's been an honor — and yet ECOC chose to honor US at its Be The Light Gala last night. All our gratitude to this organization, and to the NAMI volunteers at the heart of the partnership!
