Pumpkin season is here, and there’s still time to make it local.

Before you grab a pumpkin from the grocery store, consider visiting a local farm stand, market, or pumpkin patch. It’s a simple way to support local growers and make a fall tradition feel a little more connected to this place.

More than twenty volunteers gathered at Mesa Valley Wildlife Preserve this week to sow thousands of milkweed seeds into the soil, one handful at a time.

Monarchs depend exclusively on milkweed to raise their young. As milkweed habitat has disappeared across the country, so have the butterflies. This community-led restoration effort, co-led by Palmer and Restored Lands who provided funding, expertise, and locally-collected seeds, is a direct response to diminishing pollinator habitat.

Volunteers carefully worked milkweed seeds into two designated restoration areas throughout the preserve before watering the ground to give the seeds their best start. Afterward, the group gathered for a pizza lunch and presentations from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Fountain Creek Watershed District on Monarch ecology, milkweed, and the health of our local watershed.

This recipe is easy, packed with Pueblo chile flavor, and perfect for a fall weekend, game day, or casual dinner with friends.

Use sausage from Gagliano’s Italian Market and cheese from Springside — two Pueblo favorites — but you can also use it as a starting point and make it your own with ingredients from local markets, farm stands, or producers near you.

Join us at Mesa Valley Wildlife Preserve on Monday, Oct. 12 for a morning of hands-on habitat work. Palmer Land Conservancy is partnering with Restored Lands to help create more pollinator habitat at Mesa Valley. Together, we’ll sow native seeds that will support Monarch butterflies and other pollinators when they bloom next spring.

Mesa Valley is already a quiet refuge in the heart of Colorado Springs, and this is a chance to help make it even more supportive for the wildlife that depends on it.

No experience is needed. Just come ready to spend time outside, learn something new, and help care for a place that gives so much back to this community. Lunch is on us!

But wildlife and water don’t stop at those boundaries. They rely on larger, connected landscapes to stay healthy, especially as seasons change.

That is one reason conservation matters beyond a single park, trail, or property line. Protected land helps keep larger landscapes intact, which benefits wildlife, water, working lands, and the communities that share these places.
