It’s that time of the year when nonprofit people drive around with our trunks full of presents: teddy bears, coats, and gifts to deliver.
Our families also need a lasting gift: social capital.
(That’s why I started the Neighbor Program almost 10 years ago—matching families with a volunteer who brings dinner once a month for six months.)
Can you be present once a month for one COS family January-June 2026?
I’ve never before had such a long a list of waiting families in Colorado Springs (and a few in Aurora, too).
What changed? We have SO MANY grandmas and aunties keeping kids out of foster care. These families hover around the poverty line, and rarely get the support foster families get from the county (daily stipend for food/transportation and casework help).
If you want to be a gift to one of these families for six months, please tell me! I’d LOVE to get them all matched by Christmas.
It’s especially hard to find matches east of Powers, and we have three in Peyton and Calhan right now!
- Rockrimmon - adoptive family, 3 kids total
- Calhan #1 - grandma raising grandson
- Calhan #2 - grandma raising grandsonPeyton - auntie raising two kids
- Briargate/Voyager near TCA - adoptive family, 4 kids total
- Research/Powers - Single foster mom raising sibling set of two
- Woodmen and Powers - grandma with three grandkids
- South Springs/Fort Carson Area - grandma with three grandkids
- Airport and Union - auntie with two kids total
- Austin Bluffs and Barnes - adoptive family, one child
