🇺🇸 A well-deserved day on the water! 🎣

What an honor it was to host the leadership team from the 9th Marine Corps Recruiting District for a much-needed day of R&R on Colorado’s beautiful Blue River.

These dedicated Marines, along with approximately 200 Marine recruiters, take tremendous pride in serving and working alongside local communities, municipalities, and schools throughout their district. Their mission is simple, but powerful: They make Marines. 🇺🇸

A heartfelt thank you to Cutthroat Anglers owner Ben McCormick and pro guide Samantha Grobaski for joining us and supporting our Marines during this incredible, first-of-its-kind experience.

We also want to give a HUGE thank you to Project Healing Waters Alpine Program Lead Joe Ben Slivka and mentor extraordinaire David Powell for helping make this trip possible!

David went above and beyond, serving as the casting instructor the day before and then sharing his knowledge and experience as an exceptional mentor on the water.

Days like this are about so much more than fly fishing. They’re about connection, camaraderie, time outdoors, and giving back to those who dedicate so much of themselves in service to others.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this special experience possible. 🎣🇺🇸

🇺🇸 25 YEARS LATER. WE REMEMBER.
Twenty-five years ago, our nation changed forever.

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 lives were taken. In the face of unimaginable tragedy, we also witnessed extraordinary courage.

Firefighters climbed the stairs while others were running down. Police officers, EMTs, paramedics, and first responders ran toward danger. Search and rescue teams and their K-9 partners worked tirelessly through the devastation. Ordinary Americans became heroes by helping complete strangers.

And in the days, months, and years that followed, an entire generation answered another call.

Thousands of Americans enlisted, reenlisted, or continued their military service—many deploying to Afghanistan, Iraq, and combat zones around the world. Some never returned home. Others returned carrying wounds, both visible and unseen.

Today, many members of that Post-9/11 Generation are part of the Project Healing Waters family. At Project Healing Waters Colorado Springs / Pueblo, we have the privilege of standing beside veterans and active-duty service members whose lives and service are forever connected to the events of that September morning.

Today, we honor every life lost. Every family forever changed. Every firefighter. Every police officer. Every paramedic. Every K-9 team. Every service member. And every American who answered the call when our country needed them most.

25 years may have passed. But we have not forgotten. We will not forget. And we will never stop honoring those who served, sacrificed, and gave everything.

September is Su***de Prevention Month.

For the Veteran community, this month carries particular weight.

Too many Veterans continue to struggle with wounds that aren't always visible. Too many feel isolated in those struggles. And too many lives are still being lost to su***de.

This month is an opportunity to talk about it on a larger scale than our day to day efforts to fight this problem.

To check on the people around us. To listen when someone is struggling. To remind Veterans that asking for help is a sign of strength and that there are people and communities ready to stand beside them.

At Project Healing Waters, we have seen what can happen when Veterans find connection again. Sometimes it starts with a fly rod in hand, a few hours on the water, or simply being surrounded by people who understand.

Those moments of connection matter.

This September, we encourage everyone to reach out, have the difficult conversations, and make sure the Veterans in your life know they don't have to navigate the difficult moments alone.

At Project Healing Waters, our fly tying nights bring Veterans together in rooms filled with laughter, silence, and everything in between.

For many, it’s the first time in a long time they’ve felt calm. Connected. At peace.

It’s not just a fly. It’s a step forward.

The Lazy R offers Veterans in Project Healing Waters one of the most memorable and restorative fishing experiences in Colorado. Tucked along a fully private stretch of Beaver Creek, this high-alpine watershed is an angler’s haven. Multiple deep pools, lively riffles, and sweeping runs are teeming with rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout—along with rare golden and tiger trout that turn every outing into an adventure. While most fish run a healthy 12 to 16 inches, the creek also holds trophy-class trout measuring 24 inches and beyond, offering steady rod-bending action alongside true bucket-list catches.

The setting is classic Colorado high country: quiet, untouched, and completely serene. Without the pressure of public crowds or river traffic, Veterans can slow down, take a deep breath, and reconnect with nature in an environment that fosters genuine healing and camaraderie.

None of this would be possible without the remarkable generosity of Randy and Diane Allen. By opening their ranch to multiple trips each season, they welcome our Veterans, mentors, and staff with unmatched warmth and support. Of all the outings hosted by the Colorado Springs Chapter, the Lazy R stands out as a true crown jewel—a sanctuary where world-class private water meets the restorative power of the great outdoors.

Project Healing Waters Colorado Springs is growing, and we're looking for a few passionate volunteers to join our Marketing Team!

Do you enjoy social media, storytelling, community engagement, or content creation? This is an opportunity to use your skills to make a real difference in the lives of disabled Veterans.

As a Marketing Team Volunteer, you'll help:
🎣 Share the stories of our Veterans, programs, and events
📱 Grow and engage our social media community
🤝 Strengthen partnerships and community outreach
📣 Support branding, marketing, and promotional efforts
📝 Assist with planning and representing PHW at local events

We're especially looking for volunteers with intermediate to advanced social media skills who are comfortable creating content, posting across platforms, and helping expand our reach.
Every post, photo, story, and connection helps bring Veterans closer to the camaraderie, healing, and community found through fly fishing and the outdoors.
