Base Camp is coming to a river near YOU! 🏕️🎣

Project Healing Waters Colorado Springs just completed our very first test setup—and these incredible tents are the real deal.

Huge thank you to the team at Montana Canvas in Belgrade, Montana. If you’ve ever seen their work in person, you know immediately—these are built to last.

For our Colorado Springs program, these tents will become the heart of our new Base Camp setup.

This is more than just a space—it’s a place for our veterans to reconnect, find peace, and rebuild that sense of camaraderie they know so well, all while fly fishing on the river.

We’re beyond grateful for our volunteers, supporters, and Montana Canvas for helping bring this vision to life.

Stay tuned… this is just the beginning. 🇺🇸

What a truly incredible night we had last night at our fundraiser. We are filled with so much gratitude for our amazing fundraising team whose hard work made this event such a huge success. Your dedication and heart for this mission truly showed in every detail.

A huge thank you to our generous sponsors who made this night possible:
Ryan Law
Engelhardt Family Foundation
John and Sandi Andrews
CACI
EJCM Construction
SACK-Harencak Consulting
Acuity Innovations
Dave Brown Team

One of the most powerful parts of the evening was hearing from our guest speakers.

Former Judge David Shakes, who created the 4th Judicial District Veterans Trauma Court here in Colorado Springs, shared the mission behind this specialized, voluntary program that supports veterans facing service-related trauma such as PTSD, TBI, and substance abuse. Through treatment, accountability, and peer support, this program helps address the root causes many veterans face and provides a path forward.

And then there was Mitts…..

Mitts, once a participant in the veterans trauma court program and now an active volunteer and participant with Project Healing Waters - shared his life story before, during and after his military service. From tragedy to triumph, he deeply and emotionally touched our hearts. With over 130 people in attendance, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

Mitts, thank you for not giving up. Thank you for sharing your story! There’s a veteran or service member out there who will hear about your story and will quickly realize they’re not alone.

And to Judge Shakes, thank you for taking Mitts out on the river and for the incredible work you continue to do for our veterans. Your work has truly changed and saved many lives. 🙏🏼

What an unforgettable evening of community, healing, and hope.

A Tribute to Women’s History Month. Women have played a powerful role in the history of fly fishing for centuries, shaping the sport we know today. 🎣✨

It began in the 15th century with Dame Juliana Berners, who wrote the first known treatise on fishing with an artificial fly in 1496, laying the foundation for the sport.

In the 1800s, Mary Orvis Marbury helped establish modern fly-tying standards while managing operations at Orvis and publishing the influential book Favorite Flies and Their Histories in 1892. During that same era, Lady Caroline Gordon-Lennox made history hosting the first all-women’s fly fishing trips on the legendary River Spey in Scotland.

By the late 1800s, Cornelia “Fly Rod” Crosby became the first female celebrity fly angler—known as Maine Guide #1—bringing fly fishing to the national stage through sports shows and public demonstrations.

In the 20th century, Joan Wulff, widely known as the First Lady of Fly Fishing, transformed the sport with her world-class casting skills and revolutionary teaching methods.

From pioneering authors and innovators to educators and ambassadors, women have been shaping the legacy of fly fishing for over 500 years—and their impact continues to inspire generations on the water. 💙🎣

Women have been part of fly fishing since the very beginning. One of the earliest books on the sport, The Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle, was published in 1496 by Dame Juliana Berners—a remarkable reminder that women helped shape the foundation of fly fishing centuries ago.

Although often overlooked in history, women played a major role in advancing the sport. In the 1800s, pioneers like Mary Orvis Marbury and Cornelia "Fly Rod" Crosby helped define modern fly-tying and brought national attention to angling. The 20th century saw legends like Joan Wulff revolutionize casting techniques and inspire generations of anglers.

Today, women continue to grow the fly fishing community—championing conservation, mentorship, and inclusivity on the water. We’re proud to celebrate and support the incredible women anglers who keep this tradition thriving. 🎣

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Colorado proudly honors and celebrates our fly fishing women today and every day.

HUGE gratitude to Aquatic Biologist Peter Stitcher of Ascent Fly Fishing for an incredible master class on entomology and the art of matching the hatch. He walked us through a detective-like approach to understanding aquatic insects—their life cycles and behaviors—and how to select flies that perfectly imitate a fish’s natural diet.

We took a deep dive into the science behind year-round food sources for trout, from mayflies and caddisflies to stoneflies, midges, and terrestrial insects.

Truly fascinating to see the level of detail that goes into successful fly fishing. 🎣

We want to give a huge thank you to the team at Montana Canvas up in Belgrade, Montana. What they build is the real deal. If you’ve ever seen their tents in person, you can tell right away these things are made to last.

For our Colorado Springs Project Healing Waters program, these tents are going to become the heart of our new Base Camp setup.

The idea is simple, create a place where veterans can stay close to the water, fish all day, share meals together, and spend the evening around camp talking and decompressing. It turns a fishing trip into something much more meaningful.

Base Camp will allow us to rotate small groups of participants and mentors through camp over several weeks, which means we can get a lot more veterans on the water each season and give them a place that truly feels like a community.

To everyone at Montana Canvas, thank you for the work you do and for supporting efforts like this.

Your craftsmanship is going to help create a lot of meaningful moments for the Veterans we serve, and we are truly grateful.

Our team is passionate about supporting the veterans who make up our community. Through employee contributions, we’re able to directly invest in organizations that are creating real, lasting impact locally.

Josh Dinkins, Production Manager, recently had the opportunity to connect with Jerry, a volunteer and participant who shares why this mission matters. Hearing how Project Healing Waters gives veterans purpose shows just how meaningful this work truly is.

We want to give a HUGE thank you to Veterans United Home Loans – Colorado Springs for their incredibly generous $5,200 donation to our organization! 🇺🇸

Through the amazing Veterans United Foundation and their “Give Where You Live” program, employees donate a portion of their paycheck to directly support local veterans in our community. That kind of heart and commitment makes a real difference.

Josh Dinkins had the opportunity to sit down and interview John, one of our dedicated volunteers and program participants who shared a powerful story about how this organization literally saved his life. Stories like John’s are exactly why this mission matters.

John, thank you for your courage, for sharing your journey, and for helping other veterans see that there is hope and a path forward. And thank you again to Veterans United for standing beside our veteran community in such a meaningful way.

This is what impact looks like. 💙
