Happy 250th Birthday, America. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Our history has never been perfect. It has been marked by extraordinary achievements, difficult chapters, courageous people, and generations who believed tomorrow could be better than today.

That belief remains a part of the American spirit.

As we celebrate this Independence Day, we're grateful for those who built this nation, those who continue to serve it, and those who work every day to make it stronger for the next generation.

Here's to 250 years of our country's freedom, service, hope, and possibility...
..and many more.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at the USAFA Way of Life Alumni Group. We hope you celebrate safely.

The legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen forever changed American aviation and military history through courage, resilience, and excellence in service.

Now, that legacy will have a permanent home at the U.S. Air Force Academy and honor the first African American flying unit in U.S. history. Located at Davis Airfield, named for Gen. Benjamin O. Davis, commander of the Tuskegee Airmen, the memorial will inspire future generations of leaders, aviators and innovators.

The USAFA Way of Life Alumni Group, Tuskegee Airmen Inc.(TAI), and Air Force Cadet Officer Mentor Association (AFCOMA) have formed a coalition to raise funds in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen. In close partnership with the U.S. Air Force Academy Association & Foundation, this coalition is officially launching our campaign in support of the new memorial.

As members of the Air Force Academy community, we have the opportunity to help ensure this important history is preserved and shared with future generations. We invite you to stand with us in honoring these trailblazers and supporting the future memorial at USAFA.

The story of Memorial Day is more complex โ€” and more connected to Black history โ€” than many Americans were taught in school.

One of the earliest documented Memorial Day commemorations happened in 1865 in Charleston, led by newly freed Black Americans just weeks after the end of the Civil War.

Near the end of the Civil War, Confederate forces had turned the Washington Race Course into an outdoor prison camp for Union soldiers. Conditions were horrific, and many Union troops died there and were buried in a mass grave.

After the war ended, freed Black residents of Charleston โ€” many of them formerly enslaved people โ€” organized to properly bury the Union soldiers. They exhumed the bodies from the mass grave, gave them dignified individual burials, and built a fence around the cemetery with an arch that reportedly read:

โ€œMartyrs of the Race Courseโ€

Then, on May 1, 1865, thousands of Black Charlestonians gathered for a massive remembrance ceremony. Historical accounts describe:
Black schoolchildren carrying flowers
Singing spirituals and patriotic songs
Black ministers leading prayers
Union soldiers marching
Families decorating graves

Many historians consider this one of the first Memorial Day observances in American history, tying together freedom, citizenship, and dignity.

For newly freed African Americans, Union soldiers represented liberation from slavery.
Honoring the dead became a public declaration that Black Americans belonged fully in the nation. The ceremony connected remembrance with emancipation and democracy.

The modern national narrative of Memorial Day often centers on later commemorations organized by white veteransโ€™ groups after the Civil War.

Over time, many Black contributions have been minimized or omitted in our textbooks.
The Charleston ceremony faded from mainstream public history for decades, but the story regained national attention largely through the work of historian David W. Blight, whose research highlighted the 1865 Charleston event as a foundational Memorial Day commemoration.

Understanding Memorial Day through Black history changes the meaning of the holiday. For many historians, that first large commemoration in Charleston represents a powerful moment when newly freed Black Americans helped define what post-Civil War America could become.
