Happy Global Cat Day! 😻

October 16 is also National Feral Cat Day, created by Alley Cat Allies to encourage humane, evidence-based approaches to helping community cats. πŸ’•

Their 2026 theme is "Cats Are Community."

Whether they're curled up on someone's couch or navigating an outdoor community, cats are part of the communities we serve. 🐈

Today is a great day to learn something new about community cats, TNR, feline welfare, or the challenges facing free-roaming cats. 🐾

Today is White Cane Safety Day, a day recognizing the importance of independence and safe mobility for people who are blind or have low vision.

For those of us working in the pet industry, it's also a useful reminder to think about accessibility in our own businesses. 🐾

Are entrances easy to navigate?
Are signs readable?
Are walkways clear?
Are staff trained to appropriately interact with service animals without distracting them?

Accessibility isn't just a box to check. It's part of creating welcoming communities.🌎🀝

Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day, and October is World Pet Obesity Month. 🌎

But conversations about weight don't have to be about judgment.

Body condition, nutrition, activity, treats, age, breed, medical conditions, and lifestyle can all factor into an animal's health. πŸ•

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention has also released updated communication guidelines designed to help veterinary teams and pet owners have more productive conversations about body condition.

The goal isn't a number on a scale.

The goal is healthier pets. ❀

Pet food safety is one of those topics that deserves attention long before there's a problem.

The American Feed Industry Association's October industry calendar includes training focused on designing, implementing, and documenting an animal food safety plan.

For anyone involved in pet food, manufacturing, distribution, retail, or related services, food safety isn't just a compliance issue.

It's an animal health issue.

Cats have a reputation for making veterinary visits memorable. 😹

But recent resources from the Feline Veterinary Medical Association are emphasizing practical ways veterinary teams can reduce stress throughout the entire visit, from the carrier and car ride to the waiting room, exam room, and trip home.

Small changes can matter.

A calmer carrier experience. Better handling. Less waiting. Thoughtful communication with the client.

Sometimes improving an animal's experience doesn't require a complete practice overhaul. It requires looking at the experience from the animal's perspective.

Today is World Mental Health Day. 🌎

The pet industry is full of people who care deeply. Sometimes too deeply for our own good.

We work long hours. We handle emergencies. We comfort clients. We advocate for animals. We manage teams. We solve problems. We clean things nobody wants to clean. 🧹

And sometimes we forget that the humans doing the caring need care too.

Today is a good day to check in with yourself and the people around you! 🀝

How are you REALLY doing? πŸ’š

When disaster strikes, animals don't understand evacuation orders, power outages, flooding, or wildfire warnings. ⚠

They just know something has changed.

A good reminder for all of us in animal care: Have a plan. πŸ—“

Know where animals can go. Keep records accessible. Have transportation options. Build relationships with other organizations before you need them. 🀝

Preparedness isn't pessimism. It's protection.

There is encouraging news coming from the latest national shelter data. πŸ“ˆ
According to Best Friends Animal Society's 2025 national shelter report, approximately 4.7 million dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters in 2025, while about 4 million were saved.
The report also found that 34,000 fewer dogs and cats were killed in shelters in 2025 than in 2024. ⭐
There is still work to do, but progress is worth recognizing. πŸ’ͺ🏼
Every number represents an individual animal. ❀

The ASPCA's 2026 Rescue Effect campaign is continuing through Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, with more than 450 shelters and rescues participating nationwide.

Programs like this highlight something important: getting animals into homes is only one piece of the larger animal welfare picture.

Adoption, fostering, transport, community support, veterinary access, retention programs, and partnerships all play a role. πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

It really does take an industry-wide village. 🐾
