82% black 4th graders are not profient in reading and 77% Hispanic or Latino 4th graders are also not profient in reading. Yes that's a problem, but you can be part of the solution. Please volunteer to be a family ambassador to help these numbers decline. Message for more details.

Welcome to the Movement. Together we can solve the reading crisis for all children. We initially are focused on Black Students, but all students and families are welcome.

We need volunteer Family Ambassadors to help engage and support families. We need help to get our message out to more families. We have a limited number of full scholarships available. Please help us Give the Gift of Reading to all students.

Please visit out website and connect with us.

Every child achieves their full potential

Education is critical for academic, career, and life success. Reading success is foundational to education success. Far too many children are being failed by the system. Black Youth are disproportionately impacted. Based upon the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 66% of 4th grade students in the US did not score proficient in reading. However, 82% of Black Youth did not score proficient, the lowest performing group. (http://datacenter.kidscount.org/data#USA/1/8/10,11,12,13,15,14,2719)

Why does this matter? On average 2/3 of children who are not proficient in reading by 4th grade end up on public assistance or incarcerated. 1. Nearly 85% of the juveniles who face trial in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate, proving that there is a close relationship between illiteracy and crime. More than 60% of all inmates are functionally illiterate. (https://www.dosomething.org/facts/11-facts-about-literacy-america)

Waiting for the system to meet the needs of our Youth is not working. This is a longstanding crisis. The Black Youth Success Movement was created to engage and support families so families can make sure their children build the skills to succeed.

All families and children are welcome to participate. However, the initial focus is to ensure all Black Youth achieve their full potential. Our goal is for Black Youth to become the highest performing group on national and state tests within 7-10 years.
