This is a big deal and very long time coming. Thank you, General President Sean O'Brien for leading on this issue for our great Union.

U.S. DISTRICT COURT GRANTS END TO 37-YEAR FEDERAL MONITORSHIP OF TEAMSTERS UNION

After nearly four decades, the U.S. government has officially ended federal monitorship of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, following the approval by the Honorable Loretta Preska of the Southern District of New York (Southern District) of a joint motion filed this summer by the union and the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The filing issued on June 17 sought to amend the Final Order established in 2015 and the original Consent Decree policing the union. In 1989, the Southern District and the Teamsters entered into an agreement to eliminate organized crime influence within the union and ensure fair, democratic, member-driven elections. Over the past 37 years, the Teamsters have conducted nine elections and successfully eliminated corrupt elements from the union.

Since the election of Sean M. O’Brien as Teamsters General President in 2021, the Teamsters have built a new system of rigorous checks and balances in which every member complaint is investigated, and when appropriate, referred to legal authorities.

In her ruling granting the motion, Judge Preska cited agreement by former federal judge Barbara Jones (ret.) — who has served as the Independent Review Officer monitoring the union — that the Teamsters indeed have “developed the institutional tools, processes, and procedures necessary to adequately detect, investigate, and resolve instances of major corruption.”

“True history has been made today for the Teamsters Union that begins a new chapter of self-governance and organizational independence to benefit all rank-and-file members and elected leaders,” O’Brien said. “This is the end to the longest monitorship of any union, corporation, nonprofit, or public entity in the history of the United States. Our efforts over the past four years to create a culture of vigilance in our union have proven that we can police our own. The controls in place in the Teamsters today to operate a strong, transparent, and progressive union are more stringent than any labor organization in the country.”

Organizer Moses Darden reported today that drivers at Vestis in Greensboro voted unanimously to join Local 391.

Local 391 President Rick Armstrong applauded the vote. “We have huge momentum as we construct and bargain a contract for our newest members,” Rick said. “Welcome to the Union, Vestis members!”

Vestis supplies and launders commercial uniforms and workplace supplies. They operate on a route-based delivery model, meaning they drop off clean items and pick up dirty ones on a weekly schedule for local businesses

We love the energy of our Local 391 members, whether it’s a car show, Christmas in July, a baseball outing, or this event for Labor Day (celebrating on Saturday, September 5).

So put in that Teamster gear and have a pint at Heyday Brewing at 5311 Tin Roof Way in Raleigh.

Labor Day is the one holiday that highlights the never ending contributions we as workers make to this country. Why not celebrate this day with your Teamsters, with a beer specifically brewed for us at Heyday Brewing? Show your support for ALL working people by throwing back a pint or two, because without us there is no them! -In Solidarity CEC

P.S.-Don’t forget to wear your Teamster pride, so everyone knows who we are!

“We are so proud of our ABF driver John Graf for being named a Highway Angel for his kindness in helping a motorist in a one car accident back in July,” said Local 391 Business Agent Jody Whitlock.

The driver was eventually able to climb out through the broken window with assistance from Graf and another Good Samaritan.

“It was a pretty brutal hit,” Graf recalled. “The speed limit was about 70 miles an hour there, and they hit it probably pretty close to full impact.”

Since its inception in 1997, Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) Highway Angel program has recognized professional truck drivers for the exemplary courtesy and courage they have shown others while on North America’s roadways. TCA and EpicVue are honored to recognize more than 50 recipients a ...

We are incredibly proud of these four outstanding Local 391 women!

From left to right: our most senior Trustee, Karen Matthews; Head Bookkeeper, Sheila Combs; Organizer, Tasha Jackson; and Raleigh Administrative Assistant and Titan Operator, Cynthia Wilkerson.

This week, they represented Local 391 at the Teamsters Women’s Conference in Washington, D.C., where they participated in training and educational opportunities designed to help them better represent and serve our members.

At Local 391, our goal is simple: to have the best-trained, most knowledgeable representatives possible supporting, advocating for, and defending our members.

We’re proud of these four Teamsters and grateful for their commitment to our members and our Local! 💪
