This summer, volunteers from Natixis Corporate & Investment Banking worked with us to sponsor and plant a new butterfly garden in the Learning Farm. Natixis supports sustainability work worldwide and is especially focused on initiatives that protect pollinators and enhance biodiversity. We are thankful for their hard work volunteering to install the garden and for the generous funding they provide, which helps City Green ensure healthy pollinator habitats at the Farm Eco-Center and the Farm at South Branch Preserve.

With a “if you build it, they will come” mentality, City Green’s Horticulture team carefully selected plants such as swamp milkweed, phlox, fennel, and tithonia for the garden to host butterflies like the monarch and swallowtail. In late September, many monarchs and swallowtail caterpillars emerged in the butterfly garden. As they become butterflies, the monarchs will migrate south towards Mexico for the winter. We hope to see many more butterfly varieties arrive next year to use the Farm Eco-Center as their spring & summer home. Thank you, Natixis, for helping make this possible! 🐛🦋🧡

Welcome Fall! We hope that you enjoyed your summer (and the food it brought us) so wholeheartedly that it feels easy to let go of and transition into this new season. 🍂🍎🌻

Fall is a great look for the farm and gardens. Summer’s wild and unruly crops are dying back to be replaced with neat rows of vibrant fall lettuces and greens. Some beds are tarped over to rest until spring, and others are formed anew with mounds of rich compost. Once colorful summer blooms have died back to reveal their new purpose of providing seeds for the winter birds. Asters, goldenrod, and marigolds now make their appearance throughout the garden and farm. We love this time of year for the especially  colorful farm stand where summer’s fruits and herbs sit alongside winter’s greens and gourds.

See more fall on the farm next week, Wednesday, September 30th at the free Fall Farm Tour or during our public open hours..all at the City Green Farm Eco-Center 🌱
