Happy National Library Card Sign-Up Month! This month, Abington will be offering free replacement library cards! If your card is lost or damaged stop by the Library and get a new one at no cost.

💳 This September, the Lackawanna County Library System invites you to celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month and discover the endless possibilities a library card unlocks. This year’s theme, “A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes,” is a reminder that libraries offer something for everyone. Whether you play the classics on repeat, hit shuffle to try something new, or find harmony at your library’s programs, a library card connects people of all ages and backgrounds to information, inspiration, and each other.

Library Card Sign-up Month is held by the American Library Association annually in September to mark the beginning of the school year, combat illiteracy, and encourage communities to explore the diverse materials and resources offered by their libraries. Library Card Sign-up Month gives library patrons a front row seat to the joys of getting a library card.

✍️ Abington Community Library is thrilled to host our second Local Author Fair on Saturday, September 19, from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Meet 20 talented authors from across Northeastern Pennsylvania, browse books in a variety of genres for all ages, and discover the stories and inspiration behind their work. Whether you’re looking for your next great read, a unique gift, or a fun Saturday morning activity, there’s something for everyone!

Meet a few of our featured authors:
Dorina Amendola was an artistic prodigy who earned awards and recognition throughout her youth, with many of her works still displayed at Scranton Prep. After earning a degree in chemistry from Princeton University and teaching at Marywood University and Maria Kaupas Academy, she returned to her first love of art. Today, she draws, paints, illustrates, and accepts portrait, illustration, calligraphy, and caricature commissions while helping run her family’s Italian deli in Scranton. She resides in Waverly.

Silas Hart is a 14-year-old author who has been writing books since Covid-19. He started making little stapled books and went on to write his fantasy adventure book: Kunja Rindie and the Diamond Trident, which is his debut novel. While his book is fiction, much of it is inspired by his struggles with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). In his free time, Silas enjoys watching and playing basketball, reading, listening to music and hanging out with his family and cat.

Tara Lynn Marta is a Brooklyn-born writer and author of three books: Look Back to Yesterday, Dreaming Through the Eyes of God, and Return to Yesterday. A three-time finalist in the Adelaide Literary Writing Contest, her short stories and essays have appeared in print and online. She has also spoken at colleges, libraries, and literary events.

John Fitzgerald was born in 1944 in a Pennsylvania coal-mining community and graduated from Abington Heights in 1963. After serving in Vietnam as an Army paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne, he earned degrees from Lackawanna Junior College and Drake School of Business. He is the author of three novels: Dirty Mines, Thanksgiving Breakfast, and Watergate Amendment.

Rebecca Loescher is an award-winning author and poet whose work has appeared in national children’s science magazines. She is the author of three books: No Turn for Tern, Over on the Vineyard, and The Mermaid. A longtime early childhood teacher, she taught at Kinderhaven for 30 years and now leads writing workshops for children’s authors.

🧲 Discovered magnetic letters hidden in rice with magnetic wands.
🏜️ Dug for dinosaurs in the sand.
🔎 Searched for treasures in our DIY I Spy bottles.
