What is happening with your fire protection?

Monday October 5 the Church Point Volunteer Fire Department said goodbye to one of their own. Lee Ward Bellard. The fire service is a family, a comradery that may be hard to understand for those on the outside. We are a group of people come together to fight a common enemy, we are a group of people who are a bit different in ideas of service to your community, and beyond all of that we are a group of people who quite literally depend on each other to have our back, to protect our life. When one of us is missing there is a very deep feeling that the “body” is not complete, in very much the same way when a family member passes. The members of the Church Point Volunteer Fire Department will be in mourning for some time and though in time the load will become lighter the memory of the fallen rides on. The Church Point Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank the public for their support in the loss of one of our fellow brothers. We know across the town and even reaching out of town his absence will be felt by many for he was in essence “all about Church Point”. He will be remembered for his great service. Others may rise up to fill his positions but we will never fill his shoes. He was one of a kind. Again We offer our heart felt thanks to his family for the many years of service that he gave, for you did lend him to us.

When the tones drop, and the sirens wail, he will always ride with us.

What is happening with your fire protection?

Wednesday September 29, the Church Point Volunteer Fire Department lost one of their own. Lee Ward Bellard. He did not die in “the line of Duty” in the normal sense of the phrase but he did die “on duty”, for even while in the hospital his thoughts were on the fire department. Lee’s commitment and dedication to the fire department in many facets showed in his long term service, his tenacity over the supposed misplace of even one penny, his meticulous oversite of parliamentary rule of order, teaching first aid, and an air of personal attitude that said it was an honor to be a part of the Church Point Volunteer Fire department. His commitment and help was instrumental in the forming of the Acadia Parish Fire Protection District #10 to insure the financial institution and oversite for long term fire service in our district. The Church Point Volunteer Fire department and the Acadia Parish Fire Protection #10 must continue on without his physical presence but it will not go on without his long-term spirit and influence for it is ingrained in the very essence of who we are and he will be in our hearts.

We offer our heart felt thanks to his family for the many years of service that he gave, for you did lend him to us.

If you passed by Central Park tonight and you saw the fire truck spraying water, that was us doing draft training. We do this to keep the line from the pond clean in case we ever need to use the water supply, and to keep up our skills updated. We hope we never have to use the pond water to fight a fire but it’s good practice just in case.

It is great sadness to report we have lost one of our lifetime members of the fire department and Chairman of our fire district board. Thank you sir for your years of service and dedication.

What is happening with your fire protection?
We would like to say thank you and well done to the group of firefighters that participated and completed the 911 honor stair climb. 2200 steps completed on the bleacher stairs at the high school track. 5 completed that climb; Jeff Stelly, Sarah Stelly, David Adams, Rebecca Adams, Berl Adams, Diane Adams. We had others committed to participate but they were prevented by last minute work requirements or commitment changes. We thank them for their desire to participate. May we never cease to honor those responders by remembering their sacrifice.
Also in the process of the event we were able to accomplish PPE training in the use of bunker gear and air pack installation. It was also a challenge of physical fitness.

What is happening with your fire protection?

We drove the trucks. Was it to a fire, and accident, what emergency was it for? Actually, it was simply to keep the trucks workable and to test for problems. A vehicle needs to be brought up to temperature and run every so often to keep the lubrication fresh and in place, evaporate any moisture that may have accumulated, and burn out any carbon that may accumulate on short run operations. These trucks need to be ready to roll at a moments notice. It is important that we know to the best of our ability, they are indeed ready go immediately into service. Particularly if we do not have a major call, “which is a good thing”, we roll the trucks down the road far enough to exercise them well and this is also a good time to retest radios, lights, sirens, and general operations. This operation also allows us to trade around to different trucks to stay fresh in the operations of them all. We never truly know which truck we may need to operate and if we get rusty it can slow down our response.

Consistent maintenance and repairs of all the equipment is very important. We must be confident that it will operate when we need it because “it is embarrassing when it does not work”, WELL, though that is true, the most important reason is, your life or ours may depend on the immediate operation of any given piece of equipment at any time. A firefighter can only be as efficient as his equipment allows him to be.

What is happening with your fire protection?
Note a change to last weeks post. Due to an oversight the time was incorrect on the group doing the stair climb. The correct time will be at 6:00 P.M. This is because a team from the Church Point Volunteer Fire Department will be competing in water fights in Arnaudville earlier in the day. These competitions help with moral and keep firefighting skills honed.

Again, do take time to remember September 11, 2001 There was a vow by many to never forget. 2977 people died that day. 343 firefighters, 60 police officers and 10 EMS workers died in that initial tragedy. A stair climb challenge/memorial was created in memory of the emergency personnel that climbed the 110 flights of stairs, 2200 steps to try to save lives and lost their own life in the process. Yes it has been a while but firefighters and emergency personnel are still putting their lives on the line to save others.

As listed last week, In the spirit of memorial and remembrance a group of people, some firefighters, will be meeting at the Church Point High School track on Saturday, September 12 at 6:00 P.M “again note change”. “yes still one day after 9/11 because of schedules etc” to honor those brave people in an attempt to make those 2200 steps. If you get a chance, stop by and cheer them on or join in as you wish. This is not an organized public event but we wanted to give our note of gratitude and support to those participating in this show of honor given, by remembering their loss and most likely the loss still felt by the families of those brave people.

September 11, 2001 Do you remember? There was a vow by many to never forget. 2977 people died that day. 343 firefighters, 60 police officers and 10 EMS workers died in that initial tragedy. A stair climb challenge/memorial was created in memory of the emergency personnel that climbed the 110 flights of stairs, 2200 steps to try to save lives and lost their own life in the process.

In the spirit of memorial and remembrance a small group of people, some firefighters, will meet at the Church Point High School track on Saturday, September 12 at 8:30 A.M. “yes one day after 9/11 because of work schedules etc” to honor those brave people in an attempt to make those 2200 steps. If you get a chance, stop by and cheer them on or join in as you wish. This is not an organized public event but we wanted to give our note of gratitude and support to those participating in this show of honor given, by remembering their loss and most likely the loss still felt by the families of those brave people.
