Putting the Garden to Bed for Winter

As cooler weather arrives, it's time to tuck the garden in for a well-deserved winter rest!

Clean up spent plants and diseased foliage, but leave some seed heads and stems for wildlife.

Plant spring bulbs for beautiful blooms next year.

Divide perennials and transplant while the soil is still warm.

Mulch garden beds with shredded leaves to protect roots and enrich the soil.

Protect tender plants from freezing temperatures.

Collect seeds from your favorite flowers for next season.

Clean and store tools, drain hoses, and tidy up pots.

Remember, a garden doesn't have to be perfectly tidy! Leaving some natural areas provides winter shelter for beneficial insects and wildlife. 🐝

A little work now means a beautiful start next spring!

A Walk Through History at the Chouteau Cemetery

Today, the Chouteau Garden Club was delighted to welcome more than 20 guests for a historical cemetery tour led by Terry Lamar, a member of the Mayes County Historical Society. Together, we took a walk through Chouteau's past, learning about the lives, families, and stories of those laid to rest in our community cemetery.

For the Chouteau Garden Club, our cemetery holds a particularly special place in our history.

In the early days, Chouteau was a bustling cattle town situated along the old Eastern Shawnee Trail, where herds traveled north from Texas toward Missouri. Cattle were a familiar sight, and by the 1920s and 1930s, keeping them out of gardens was no small undertaking! Even the cemetery was not spared, with wandering livestock helping themselves to flowers placed upon graves and occasionally having to be chased away from funeral services.

It was this rather unusual gardening problem that inspired the ladies of Chouteau to take action. They organized a Garden Club and, through fundraising and community effort, financed fencing to protect the cemetery from roaming cattle.

More than 80 years later, the Chouteau Garden Club continues that tradition of service, helping care for and maintain our local cemeteries. Though we no longer have to chase cattle away from funeral services, our commitment to preserving these sacred grounds and honoring those who came before us remains unchanged.

We extend our sincere thanks to Terry Lamar and the Mayes County Historical Society for sharing their knowledge and helping bring our community's history to life. Thank you as well to everyone who joined us today! It was wonderful to see such an interest in preserving and appreciating Chouteau's heritage.

A cemetery is more than a place of remembrance; it is a record of the people who built our community, and their stories deserve to be told.
