PRESS RELEASE: Fall In Love with Chincoteague Island This Autumn - Natural Attractions, Seasonal Events, and Your Peaceful Coastal Getaway

Chincoteague Island, VA – [October 28, 2026] – Autumn brings a special kind of magic to Chincoteague Island, where peaceful coastal scenery, unforgettable wildlife encounters, and the warmth of small-town hospitality invite visitors to experience the island at a gentler pace. With golden marshes, brilliant sunsets, and refreshing breezes off the water, fall is the perfect time to discover why Chincoteague is a beloved destination for a peaceful coastal getaway.

As summer crowds fade, nature takes center stage. Migrating waterfowl return to the Atlantic Flyway, marsh grasses turn golden, and bright red pickleweed adds splashes of color to the landscape. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore offer endless opportunities to explore the outdoors, from hiking and biking scenic trails to spotting the famous Chincoteague ponies and beachcombing along the shoreline to casting a line into the surf. Scenic boat cruises provide another opportunity to experience the island's waterways and wildlife, with every outing offering a fresh perspective on the beauty of the season.

FALL INVITES YOU TO ENJOY THE ISLAND BEYOND ITS NATURAL TREASURES

Browse locally owned shops for distinctive gifts, handcrafted finds, coastal décor, and seasonal favorites. Settle in for a delicious meal featuring fresh local seafood, including oysters and clams, and discover the welcoming spirit of a community that makes visitors feel right at home. Whether you are planning a day trip, a weekend escape, or a longer stay, Chincoteague Island offers the perfect blend of outdoor adventure, local flavor, and laid-back coastal charm—all the reasons to make this autumn a season to remember.

The season comes alive with festive gatherings and local traditions, inviting locals and guests to explore a calendar full of events that capture the heart of fall on the islands. Enjoy Halloween-themed fun with scary classic movies at Island Theatre, a Great Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt with Island Community House, Masquerade Ball fundraiser for the Eastern Shore Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and a Beary Scary Hey Ride at Jellystone Park campground. Ghost stories and spooky tales at Story Swap, events at local museums and the Farmers and Artisans Market, and craft classes are also brewing up plenty of seasonal fun. Pack your costumes to participate in Trunk or Treat at the New Church Welcome Center on October 31 from 12pm - 4pm or Trick or Treat Main Street with Historic Main Street Merchants from 4pm - 7pm.

November offers a dinner theatre, craft fairs, art and craft classes, bingo, and more. It is also National Oyster Month, so make sure you leave time to enjoy some Chincoteague "salts" from our local restaurants and eateries. Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to enjoy a family getaway, so visit to plan your Thanksgiving dinner out on the town with several restaurants offering traditional dinners and buffets. Reservations are recommended by many, so book soon. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge has fun activities planned during Waterfowl Weekend, including extended hours on the Wildlife Loop which will be open to vehicles from 9am to dusk Thanksgiving Day through Sunday, November 29.

Plan your autumn adventure now and discover why so many visitors say that once you have experienced Chincoteague Island in the fall, you will want to return year after year. Full event details and travel inspiration are always available at .
