Pink lady's slippers are large, showy wildflowers belonging to the orchid family and sometimes found near the Wildlife Loop parking lot. We found this plant just the other day, on May 2.

Wild lady’s slippers have special requirements that make them difficult to cultivate, and they rarely survive transplanting from the wild. It is illegal to dig or pick the orchids on federal lands.

Interestingly, orchid seeds do not have food supplies inside them like most other kinds of seeds. Pink lady’s slipper seeds require threads of the fungus to break open the seed and attach them to it. The fungus will pass on food and nutrients to the pink lady's slipper seed. When the lady’s slipper plant is older and producing most of its own nutrients, the fungus will extract nutrients from the orchid roots.

Got beach weather? Well, not really - springtime temps at the refuge are usually cooler than the city/suburbs in the springtime. But, there's always something of interest and beauty, no matter the weather. This pic taken on the Wildlife Loop, April 2015.

Refuge forecast this weekend -Plenty of smiles and wonderment! And the weather looks pretty darn good, too.

We picked up this turtle crossing the loop road and took a quick pic for later ID. Now we're not sure if it's a cooter, slider, painted or perhaps mud turtle. Next time we'll get a pic of more than the tummy (plastron). Five years old?

Snapping turtles on the refuge have ended hibernation and are out and about. This large fellow was seen yesterday, April 1, next to the Wildlife Loop road. We saw several others off the loop plus a large one on Beach Road. Also seen a couple day ago were four Muskrats cavorting in Shoveler Pool (north side of the Loop). There are few migrating birds, but other wildlife to be seen!

Here's to all the hardworking Dads out there! DYK that -- unlike most bird species -- the male King Rail takes the lead in building the nest? Both parents also take turns incubating the clutch of 8 to 11 eggs. Find out more about our Bird of the Week: https://abcbirds.org/bird/king-rail/
