Our neighborhood watch group covers Beat 812 (Central-Harlem, 60th - 65th) St. We give a few hours every month to drive up and down the streets and alleys to look for city services that get submitted to the ward office. We also pay attention to the community concerns that are brought to our group and discussed at the monthly CAPS Beat 812 meetings. We have lost a lot of members over our 27 years and are in need of some new blood. We understand that young families have many commitments and cannot give the hours to patrol, but you can help by taking care of your block. Organize a phone tree and call 911 when it warrants. Work together to make sure you get the city services your block needs; tree trimmed, garbage carts all have lids, street/alley lights all working, graffiti removal, etc. Young seniors are the perfect group to volunteer to do the patrolling (always with a partner) You can give time during the day or night, as many hours are you like.
We have had many successes that makes a difference in our community, but we don't brag so new residents don't know the benefit of a group like ours. We have a great working relationship with the Alderman's offices and our 8th District Police. We have worked closely with them on many crime related/quality of life issues during our time as a neighborhood watch group.
We are currently evaluating our purpose as a community organization and hope we can sustain. You may not understand the benefit of such a group, but we have a benefit.
We no longer have a website, but will continue to use Facebook and other means to reach the community.
Look for an upcoming article in the Clearing yellow page and hopefully Southwest-News Herald.
