Through the Urban Agriculture program, youth gain hands-on experience in food sovereignty and community food systems while building leadership skills and connections to their local environment ✨

This Thursday at Harvest Dinner, you’ll get to experience their work firsthand - with a rooftop garden cocktail hour, tours of our 1.75-acre farm, garden and hydroponics lab, plus delicious food from our culinary youth program and talented Chicago chefs. 🌱🎡 Agriculture meets the county fair! Last month, members of the Gary Comer FFA chapter took their agricultural skills on the road to the DuPage County Fair for the Urban Agriculture Showcase.

Our youth connected with fairgoers through hands-on activities and demonstrations, sharing what they’ve learned about hydroponic growing, worm composting, seed starting, and garden-to-table recipes they created themselves. 🌿🥕🪱 And for many of our FFA members, this was their first-ever county fair experience!

Senior Omajni Slaughter had the chance to connect with the DuPage County 4-H chapter to learn more about their animals and shared that “The DuPage County Fair was very hands-on and informational. It offered a lot opportunities to learn about different programs and learn about agriculture. I learned a lot more about the animals there and how to take care of them. Next year we can bring our own chickens and quail and show them in the poultry show!”

Our youth also joined in on the full fair experience - from a pie-eating contest and Minute to Win It games to trying fair food and checking out the winning entries across different competitions 🥧🍿

A huge thank you to the DuPage County Fair and Fairground Manager Jim McGuire for making this experience possible. We’re already looking forward to bringing our FFA members back for another year of learning, sharing, and having fun 🌱💚
