How do plants and animals adapt to survive our cold winters?

During winter, nature slows down, and it feels still, but life is everywhere. You just have to look closely and the season comes alive☃️

We had a fantastic 9 months of getting muddy, exploring every corner of Woodend's 40-acres, and making amazing friends along the way💚

A marine biologist, write, Nature Forward (formerly Audubon Naturalist Society) member, Carson is perhaps best known as the mother of the modern environmental movement.

Her groundbreaking 1962 book, Silent Spring, helped catalyze the US ban on DDT - a pivotal action that contributed to the recovery of many bird species like Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Pelicans, Robins, Peregrine Falcons, and Great Blue Herons.

Today is her 119th birthday 🥳 Join us in honoring this trailblazer whose legacy continues to share environmental stewardship, inspire actions, and remind us that one determined voice can spark a movement that endures for generations.

All photos were taken at Rachel Carson Conservation Park in Montgomery County. She lived in Silver Spring for nearly 30 years.

Calluna Flower Truck will be returning to Woodend After Dark this June! Come and create your own custom floral design with fresh, locally sourced flowers🌸🌼🌷

Hear from Elissa, founder of Calluna Flower Truck about why they decided to be part of this year’s event:

“Returning to Woodend After Dark for a second year was an easy ‘yes’ for Calluna. Our brand is rooted in the idea that nature and joy are meant to be shared, and there is no better place to see that in action than at Nature Forward. Partnering with Nature Forward allows us to connect with our local community and support the beautification of Montgomery County. “

Get your tickets now and join us on Thursday, June 4 from 6-9pm at Woodend Nature Sanctuary: https://natureforward.org/after-dark/

Your ticket supports Nature Forward’s vital mission work in environmental education, habitat restoration, and conservation advocacy across the Capital Region.

What’s at Woodend this Wednesday?

We have a lot of amphibian species growing well and thriving in our pond!

The first picture is of an American Bullfrog tadpole. This species grows significantly bigger than spring peeper tadpoles. The green color and brown speckles are an indicator that it’s an American bullfrog.

The second picture is of a yellow spotted salamander in its larval stage. Growing from about half an inch to up to 2.5 inches, they undergo metamorphosis over two to four months before migrating to upland forests.

Keep an eye out for these amphibians!
