May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and at KWSL we wanted to create space for conversations athletes don’t always feel comfortable having out loud.

Behind every athlete is a human being navigating pressure, confidence, expectations, fear, identity, growth, and the weight that sometimes comes with performance.

On May 29, Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) Terri Turner will take over our platform for “Behind the Highlights”, a mental health & performance conversation centered around the realities athletes face both on and off the field.

Throughout the day we’ll discuss:
• pressure athletes carry
• confidence after failure
• burnout & expectations
• social media pressure
• fear of disappointing others
• identity outside of sports
• and more

We also want athletes, parents, coaches, and supporters to be part of the conversation.

We created a space for athletes to anonymously share experiences, thoughts, questions, and reflections that may be featured during the takeover.

No pressure. No perfect answers. Just honest conversations.

✨ We’ve added limited out-of-state eligibility after receiving applications from athletes across the country

They’re leaders, students, daughters, teammates, and humans first.

This month, KWSL is going green for mental health 💚

We’re raising awareness.
Breaking stigma.
And building a community where athletes feel seen, supported, and strong in every way.

As we conclude the Month of the Military Child 💜

Most people don’t know this about military athletes… 👀

They move because they have to not because they want to.

Missing a tryout shouldn’t mean missing their shot.

And here in Virginia, home to one of the largest military populations in the country, this impacts more families than people realize.

Now you know. So pass it on. 💜

We’re awarding $1,000 scholarships to girl athletes who show up, lead, and put in the work on and off the field.

Limited scholarships available. Don’t wait to apply.

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to support Lend A Second Hand’s .inc 3rd Annual Showering the City event.

Because of your generosity, we were able to provide 105 pieces of sports equipment to student-athletes in the City of Hampton, supporting athletes across 5 different sports.

25 cleats.
16 bats.
16 helmets.
And so much more.

All remaining items were donated to West Hampton Community Center, Deen Ball Sports, and Lend A Second Hand to continue supporting athletes beyond the event.

Shoutout to our newest follower, THE Mayor of Hampton for pulling up and showing love because moments like that matter.

We’re grateful for every partner location that supported this drive, but a special thank you to and for going all in and helping us pack the cars out.

This is what community looks like.

& we’re just getting started.
