The Lions celebrated first quarter birthdays and Valentine’s Day during their monthly meeting. Everyone had a wonderful meal including birthday cake and grand fellowshipping. Special recognition was given to Lions Thomas Holiday and George McWilliams who had been longtime members. Members who participated in the social are pictured below along with those celebrating birthdays. Swamp Johns’ will be this Friday, February 13 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Lions’ Den in downtown Cherokee. Lions wish all a very Happy Valentine’s Day.

Troy Rutland, Mayor of Cherokee, spoke to Lions at the recent meeting. Rutland spoke about the town services, maintenance department projects, police department, court, library, parks and recreation, along with the senior center. In addition, Rutland emphasized the importance of growing and improving each year. Rutland is encouraging community involvement and citizen engagement. The presentation was interesting and informative.

The Cherokee Lions’ Club held their annual Christmas social along with the fourth quarter birthday celebration. All members enjoyed a delicious meal, joyful fellowship, and fun games. Members were also recognized by Lions’ International to commemorate years of service. Those receiving awards were Becky Woodis, 15 years; Kathy Hays, 20 years; Thomas Holiday 25 years; and L.O. Bishop 45 years. Each recipient received the Chevron Award in reference to a badge or insignia indicating length of service. Lions wish all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

The annual Christmas Breakfast with Santa, sponsored by the Cherokee Lions’ Club, was another success. Approximately 150 people visited Santa at the beautifully decorated Lions’ Den in downtown Cherokee. Santa and Ms. Claus were excited to hear the children’s Christmas lists while the Lions and Santa’s Elves were busy serving breakfast. The Cherokee Lions’ Club wish all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Karen Price Kent was the guest speaker at the recent Lions’ meeting. Kent attended Cherokee High School. Kent is opening a new art studio in downtown Cherokee. The Lions Club will be collecting old/used eyeglasses, this Friday night, October 10th, at the Cherokee vs Shoals Christian football game. For every pair of glasses donated you’ll receive a $2.00 voucher that can be used toward anything at the concession stand!
