This is why I refuse to have a future like this, I refuse to live in Group homes, be in Adult Foster Care or be in institutions. We need to be better advocates and stand up against the system for better support. I also refuse to live with my parents who are getting elderly, because I can't rely on them forever. So, yes please plan ahead for the future.
🙏🏽 For nearly 40 years, she devoted her life to caring for her son, who lived with severe disabilities following a childhood brain injury.😔
As his primary caregiver, she provided the daily support he relied on throughout his life.
When she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she faced an overwhelming fear shared by many aging parents and carers of disabled children:
Who would look after her loved one when she was no longer able to? 😢
Investigations later found that opportunities to assess her mental health and establish a long-term care plan for son were missed.
As her health deteriorated, she became increasingly isolated and distressed.
The case ended in tragedy, highlighting the immense pressures some family caregivers face and raising important questions about mental health support, respite services, future care planning, and the support available to families caring for disabled loved ones.
For autism families, this story serves as a reminder of the importance of planning for the future, accessing support when needed, and ensuring that no caregiver has to face these challenges alone.🙏🏽💙
