It’s possible to do the right thing for the wrong reasons.

In Matthew 6, Jesus gets straight to the heart of our motives. Giving, praying, and fasting can all look “spiritual” on the outside while our hearts are seeking recognition from others.

So how do we pursue a faith that is authentic—not performative?

In Season 7, Episode 3 of *Know God Deeply*, we continue through the Sermon on the Mount and explore what Jesus says about practicing righteousness, guarding our hearts against hypocrisy, and cultivating a relationship with God that goes deeper than appearances.

It's possible to know a lot about the Bible.....and still miss its purpose.

Scripture wasn't given to simply increase our knowledge—it was given to transform our lives.

That's why application is an essential part of the Precept Bible Study Method.

After observing what the text says and understanding what it means, we ask the question: How should this change the way I live?

Because God's Word isn't meant to stay on the page. It's meant to shape our hearts, renew our minds, and change the way we walk with Him.

As James reminds us, we're called to be doers of the Word—not hearers only.

When did this happen? Sometimes the answer to that question reveals more than you expect.

When studying a passage, look for time markers that tell you when something happened, when it happened in relation to what came before, or what hasn’t happened yet.

In John 7:1, the words “after this” point us backward—to the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus’ teaching about the bread of life, and the disciples who turned away. That context helps us understand what’s happening as Jesus moves through Galilee.

And in John 3, Nicodemus comes to Jesus “by night.” That detail matters. John repeatedly uses the imagery of light and darkness, so even a seemingly small time reference can carry significant meaning.

Don’t skip over the time markers. When something happens—and when it doesn’t—can reveal what the text is communicating.

What is happening in this passage? That’s the next question to ask when you’re studying Scripture.

What are the main events? What are the major teachings? What is the author talking about? And what is his purpose in saying it?

In John 3, the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus is on the surface about being “born again.” But keep asking what and you begin to uncover more:
What does Jesus say the new birth requires?
What does Nicodemus misunderstand?
What is Jesus actually teaching?

And when you connect those observations to John’s stated purpose in John 20:30–31, you begin to see how the purpose of the whole book shapes the way you read each individual chapter.

Don’t just ask what happened. Ask what the text is actually communicating.

Let’s mark one of Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount together 👀

This is a sample from Matthew 5:21–48, where Jesus takes the law His listeners already knew and pushes past the outward act to the heart underneath it. Read it through once before we start marking. 

Jesus repeats this phrase four times in Matthew 5: on murder, adultery, retaliation, and loving your enemy. Every time, He is quoting the familiar teaching His audience grew up with. Mark it consistently so the pattern stands out.

Every time He quotes the familiar teaching, Jesus follows it with this phrase. Mark it so it visually pairs with the last one. Then look at what follows each time: anger, lust, retaliation, and love of enemies. Where does Jesus locate the issue in each one? 

Jesus is not contradicting the law. He is revealing what it demanded all along: a transformed heart, not just controlled behavior. Obedience was never meant to stop at the outward act. Where are you most tempted to settle for looking obedient instead of actually being transformed on the inside?

Some of the smallest words in the Bible can carry some of the biggest clues.

When you’re studying a passage, don’t overlook words that show:

Contrast — but, however, nevertheless
Comparison — like, as
Time — then, after, when, until
Conclusion or connection — therefore, for, so that

These words help you see relationships between ideas, understand sequence, and follow the author’s reasoning.

Take John 3:16. That little word “for” connects the verse back to what came before it—it tells us why.

In this clip, we’re looking at how paying attention to these details can help you understand what the author is actually communicating.

Slow down. Look closely. Don’t skip the little words.

Every passage has people in it—and asking “Who?” can reveal more than you might expect.
Who wrote this? Who said it? Who are the major characters? Who is being spoken to? Who is being spoken about?

In John 7, simply identifying Jesus and the Jews who were seeking to kill Him gives us important context for what is happening.

And in John 3, knowing that Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews helps us understand the significance of his conversation with Jesus.

The people in a passage aren’t just background details. They help anchor us in what the text is actually communicating.
