A single word can change how you understand an entire passage.

Take John 3:16. It’s easy to read this verse on its own, but the word “for” connects it to the verses before it. John is giving the reason behind what he has just said.

That small word is a hinge, connecting one thought to the next and showing us how the author’s argument unfolds.

As you study Scripture, watch for words like "for, therefore, so that, and for this reason." These connecting words reveal relationships between ideas, helping you understand not just what the passage says, but how its message fits together.

Don’t separate what the author connects. Every word matters.

What can a single word reveal about the bigger story of Scripture?

In the Gospel of John, pay attention to the word hour. Early in the book, Jesus says, “My hour has not yet come.” But by John 12:23, everything shifts: “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”

That progression is intentional. John uses time markers to show how Jesus’ ministry moves toward its purpose—the cross.

When you mark these words and phrases as you study, you begin to see connections, recognize patterns, and understand how the author develops his message.

Don’t overlook the small words. They may be showing you how the whole passage fits together.

John opens his Gospel by taking us back to the beginning. Before creation, the Word already existed. John tells us that the Word was with God and was God, and that all things were made through Him. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men—a light the darkness cannot overcome.

These verses establish a foundational truth about Jesus: He is not simply a teacher who came to bring light into the world. He is the eternal Word, the source of life, and the true Light shining in the darkness.

So, as you study John 1:1–5, don't miss the details. Mark references to the Word, Jesus, life, light, and darkness. Notice how John connects these words and contrasts light with darkness. What do these details reveal about who Jesus is and why He came?
