When students feel they belong, they thrive. This belief drives the Northside Neighborhood House Community School strategy. Across the Hixson feeder pattern, that mission is coming to life through a new student-led Deaf Education mentorship program.
Launched in September by our Community School Coordinators at Hixson elementary, middle, and high schools, the program is being led by a Hixson High student ambassador. As a Deaf Education student with a younger sister in the elementary program, she wanted to bridge our campuses and create spaces for older students to guide, inspire, and connect with younger peers.
Because Hixson is the district hub for K–12 Deaf Education, this cross-school network gives students continuous care and encouragement throughout their school journey. Over the year, mentors and mentees will collaborate on joint art projects to showcase at end-of-year school festivals, celebrating peer mentorship and raising awareness.
This effort shows how investing in full-time Community School Coordinators turns local schools into connected hubs where student voices lead the way.
