Special Hockey gives children and adults with Autism, Down syndrome, and other cognitive challenges, the chance to learn and play ice hockey in an inclusive and supportive environment. Special Hockey programs have been growing successfully across the state, country, and Canada for over fifteen years. Special Hockey of the Lehigh Valley was founded in 2015 to bring this wonderful opportunity to fam
ilies in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. Our team, the Lehigh Valley Polar Bears, has dozens of players and a growing network of dedicated coaches and volunteers that help make it all possible. SHLV is a low-cost and family-friendly 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization offering both on-ice and off-ice activities throughout the season. In addition to teaching hockey and skating skills, we hope to help our participants build their confidence, make friends, and have fun as part of an organized and encouraging team. SHLV also hopes to build a stronger community by bringing people together for an important cause and offering valuable volunteer opportunities for youth and adults. We continue to be humbled by the dedication and generosity of our supporters, particularly—our incredible local hockey community. SHLV is equipped to work with athletes age 5 and up and of all skill levels, so no prior hockey or skating experience is required to participate. Each athlete is encouraged to learn to skate and play the game at their own pace, through individualized goal-setting. Player safety is a top priority in the special hockey league, so there is no checking or rough play allowed in practices, games, or tournaments. We never want cost to be the reason someone can’t be part of our team, so we strive to make this hockey program as cost-free to the participants and their families as possible. Since our founding, there have been no program or ice fees and we have a substantial inventory of free equipment we loan to our players. For more information about Special Hockey of the Lehigh Valley and how to join the Polar Bears, please send us a Facebook message or email us at [email protected]. We are always accepting new players, coaches, volunteers and fans.
