This August is all about astronomy! 🌌

☄️ The Perseid meteor shower peaks overnight on August 12 - 13. A new moon ensures darker skies and easier viewing. You can expect to see between 30-50 meteors per hour away from city and suburban lights.

✨ The globular cluster M15, also called the Great Pegasus Cluster, is visible from sunset to sunrise. Head out during the middle of the month during the new moon for best viewing!

🌙 There’s a partial lunar eclipse coming up on the night of August 27! Peak coverage is around 96%. Make plans to join us at the museum with special guest, WSB-TV Chief Meteorologist Emeritus, Glenn Burns.

💫 Meet STEM star Noa Lewis 💫

Noa is local student with a passion for all things science! In the past four years, she’s raised over $7,000 for camps, programs, and other causes with a goal to inspire young people, particularly girls, to pursue careers in STEM by removing financial barriers. Tellus was honored to receive a donation as part of her 2026 campaign!

Noa plans to pursue a career in emergency medicine, and has already started working toward her goal through internship and volunteer opportunities at area hospitals. When she is isn’t dancing, fundraising, and golfing, you can find her watching one of her favorite shows — HBO’s realistic medical drama, The Pitt.

We can’t wait to see what the future brings for Noa!

The Dumbbell Nebula? Guess the universe doesn't want us to skip arm day. 🌌🏋🏻‍♀

Cataloged as M27, this planetary nebula is located in the lesser-known constellation Vulpecula. Despite the "planetary" name, this phenomena has nothing to do with a planet. It's actually a cloud of gas created by a dying star ejecting its outer layers into deep space.

If you want to spot it yourself, look toward the center of the Summer Triangle—the giant asterism formed by the bright stars Vega, Deneb, and Altair. The constellation Vulpecula sits right in the middle of that triangle.

For the best views, grab your binoculars or a telescope and head out near the middle of the month during the new moon!
