It is with profound sadness that Rockdale County Fire Rescue announces the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Juan Antonia Smith II, who passed away on June 12, 2026.

Today, we honor a brave firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. His courage, dedication, and selflessness exemplified the highest ideals of the fire service and will never be forgotten.

Though his watch has ended, his legacy will endure in the lives he touched, the community he served, and the brothers and sisters who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Rest easy, Firefighter Smith. We have the watch from here. ❤️

The Georgia Public Safety Training Center – Fire and Emergency Services Section is excited to announce a new course entitled Effective Radio Communication. This 8-hour course helps public safety personnel overcome common barriers to effective radio communication. Topics include radio etiquette, proper transmission and broadcast techniques, and tips for overcoming barriers. The first offering of this course is August 6, 2026, and will take place at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center.

Fire Chief Rodney Wiggins from Greene County Fire Rescue has agreed to present this three (3) hour awareness program. This program will focus on lessons learned, firefighter safety, and the importance of awareness related to line-of-duty incidents and re**er trailer hazards.

This is an important training opportunity for all personnel and will provide valuable information that can help improve operational safety and decision-making on emergency scenes.
