As we anticipate the celebration of Juneteenth 2025, we remember one of the earliest public educators in Bartow County. Reverend Jefferson Milner.

Reverend Jefferson Milner (Founding Pastor, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church)

In 1866, Reverend Jefferson Milner was entrusted with a monumental task: leading the first-ever day school for Black children. His leadership, supported by Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, set the foundation for education in our community. Rev. Milner was a key figure in the post-emancipation movement in Bartow County by providing Black children with the opportunity to learn and thrive.

"The first library was intrusted to the Rev. Jefferson Milner (colored), who has a day school for colored children,--the first ever kept in this county." -September 1866
