We would’ve loved to have seen all of you tonight to hand out free snacks, but National Night Out has been canceled for this evening due to air quality. Stay safe, everyone!
UPDATE:
💙 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT IS POSTPONED. 💙
This is not an easy post to write.
Our streets have been swept. Our county employees at the Courthouse and Skamania County Sheriff’s Office have parked off-site. Our vendors are ready. Our families are ready. And so many volunteers have put in countless hours preparing for tonight.
But sometimes being Skamania Strong means knowing when to say, “Not today.”
We are postponing tonight’s National Night Out because we want to keep our Skamania Strong Lungs breathing easy. 🌲💙
Some of our volunteers would have been outside from 3:00–9:00 p.m. That is a long time to spend in smoky air.
Some of our vendors have glorious senior citizens who we absolutely want included—but have canceled because of the conditions.
And many of our families have little ones. We know parents are watching the air quality and wondering whether bringing their children out tonight is the right choice.
We want everyone there.
We want our seniors.
We want our babies and kids.
We want our volunteers.
We want our vendors.
We want our community.
And we want you to be able to come together carefree, breathe deeply, laugh loudly, and celebrate our incredible community.
So, this isn't goodbye to National Night Out. It's simply “not tonight.” ❤️
We will share a new date as soon as we can.
Thank you to every volunteer, vendor, partner, city employee, county employee, family, and friend who has worked so hard to make tonight happen. Your commitment to this community means more than you know.
We’ll gather soon. And when we do, we’ll celebrate BIG. 🎉
Until then, take care of those lungs. 💙🌲
WE STILL ARE SKAMANIA STRONG
🌫️ NATIONAL NIGHT OUT & WILDFIRE SMOKE UPDATE 🌫️
We know many of you are watching the air quality closely as wildfire smoke from fires across Washington makes its way into our area — and yes, it has crossed our minds, too.
We take the health and safety of our community seriously, and we are closely monitoring the air quality and conditions. At the same time, we recognize that with these conditions families and community partners may make different decisions based on their own circumstances, needs, and comfort level.
A few of our community partners have reached out, shared their thoughts, and indicated that they plan to attend tomorrow night. They also support giving families the opportunity to make their own informed decision about whether attending is right for them.
Here’s the plan: We will continue to monitor conditions AND see if most of our vendors plan to attend. We will make a final determination about whether National Night Out will go forward or be canceled no later than 2:00 p.m.
If we move forward, families can choose what works best for them — whether that means attending, staying home, shortening their visit, or taking additional precautions such as wearing a mask.
Our goal is to balance being responsible about health and safety with respecting families’ ability to make decisions for themselves.
We will provide the information we have and make the best decision we can with the conditions we are given.
📢 Watch for our update tomorrow by 2:00 p.m.
Fingers crossed that the smoke that is drifting about is comfortable for most and we can celebrate together! 💙
