Carmel Cares is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to making Carmel-by-the-Sea a beautiful, safe, and inviting place while taking it from special to spectacular.

Carmel Cares creates and executes community engagement projects and programs that restore and maintain the natural beauty of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Our mission includes keeping Carmel an inviting and environmentally friendly Village for all to enjoy by reducing litter and increasing recycling knowledge and habits.

Wednesday morning, a couple of the Carmel Cares team tried to pull down a kite from a tree branch on Scenic Drive. It was way too high even with our special tools. The Carmel Fire Department was making it’s usual morning rounds and stopped to assist. Thank you to the fireman for helping us to get a kite (not a cat) down from a tree!🌲 🪁

Carmel Cares at Concourse for the Cause
Car Week officially kicked off on the Monterey Peninsula, and the excitement made its way to downtown Carmel with the wonderful Concourse for the Cause!
This special Car Week event supports local nonprofits through donations from participating exhibitors, and Carmel Cares was honored to be one of the benefiting organizations. ❤️
Our amazing volunteers came out to celebrate the incredible cars, connect with our community, and share the Carmel Cares message of keeping Carmel beautiful, safe, and inviting!
It was a beautiful day filled with gorgeous cars, great people, and plenty of Carmel Cares spirit. A fun time was had by all!
Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible and to the exhibitors who generously supported local nonprofits. We are so grateful to be part of this wonderful Carmel community!

Carmel Cares had a fun time participating in the Carmel Art Walk yesterday! So many great artists in this town and such an interesting way to spend an afternoon. Thanks to the artists who participated and for showcasing their talents and sharing their delightful treats. We wouldn’t be the same community without you. Thank you!

Cigarette butts are a problem everywhere fortunately, our Carmel Cares “Butt Brigade” not only collects butts — but also facilitates the recycling of these butts to turn them into useful products through a company called TerraCycle. Carmel Cares has collected over 400,000 cigarette butts so far! Keeping them off our streets and out of our ocean!

In an effort to prepare gardens for the 32nd Annual Carmel House Tour this past Saturday, volunteers focused on the First Murphy House, home of the Carmel Heritage Society. The House Tour was presented by the Carmel Heritage Society along with the AIA Monterey Bay. The First Murphy House is where attendees went to get their tickets and maps. Making sure the gardens looked pristine and cared for was our goal. Goal accomplished!

Refreshing Ocean Avenue Medians
If you’ve driven down Ocean Avenue this past week, you may have noticed a beautiful transformation on the five medians stretching from Junipero Avenue to Monte Verde Street.
Carmel Cares Downtown Detail and Water Wizard’s teams partnered with the City Public Works water team, Town & Country Gardens & Landscaping and Alan and Katie Wheat to put a fresh coat of organic compost on this highly visible community space. This effort not only enhances the appearance of the landscape but also improves soil health, helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and supports the long-term success of over one thousand pollinator friendly native plantings installed last year. Delivering, spreading, and thoroughly watering 22 cubic yards of fresh compost in 2 days was no easy task!
What began as a vision to enhance the beauty of Ocean Avenue has evolved into a collaborative effort that showcases the best of Carmel’s commitment to stewardship, sustainability, and community engagement. As the plants continue to mature and flourish, these medians will become even more beautiful, providing year-round color and habitat while enhancing one of Carmel’s most traveled and cherished streets.
Together, we are helping keep Carmel beautiful, sustainable, and inviting for residents and visitors.
