Jefferson Cary Foundation Donation Brings New Transport Chairs to Cary Medical Center

Caribou – New transport chairs have arrived at Cary Medical Center, thanks to the generous contribution of nearly $60,000 from the Jefferson Cary Foundation.

The 19 state-of-the-art transport chairs are already in use across numerous departments throughout the hospital. Patients and community members are beginning to see and experience the benefits of these modern chairs firsthand.

“We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both our patients and our staff,” said Chad Johnson, RN, Inpatient Nurse Manager. “Patients frequently comment on the comfort and quality of the chairs, while our staff have noted that they are significantly safer to use than our previous wheelchairs. These chairs truly put the safety and well being of both patients and staff first.”

Designed with both comfort and functionality in mind, each chair features a solid, durable structure, along with attachments for IV poles, oxygen tanks, and foot pedals, all aimed at improving the experience for patients and creating ease for hospital staff transporting them.

“This donation was made possible through the generosity and commitment of our donors,” said Chelsey Anderson, Executive Director of the Jefferson Cary Foundation. “Seeing the transport chairs in use, and knowing they’re making a difference for patients, brings that impact to life.”

Founded in 1993, the Jefferson Cary Foundation is a nonprofit organization created to support projects and equipment for the benefit of all who are served by Cary Medical Center. The Foundation has donated more than $1 million to fund major initiatives throughout the hospital, including the Specialty Clinics and Chan Center, Women’s Imaging Center, The Pines Center for Women’s & Children’s Health, and the Jefferson Cary Cancer Center.

Reuben and Annette Cote Family Memorial Scholarship Honors Local Nurse at Pines Health Services

Matthew McCormack is the 2025 recipient of the Reuben & Annette Cote Family Memorial Scholarship, presented by the Jefferson Cary Foundation. The $750 award supports local nurses continuing their education, and Matthew is doing just that as he works toward his RN degree at Northern Maine Community College.

“This support means so much as I enter my final year in the Nursing program at Northern Maine Community College,” McCormack shared. “I’m honored and truly grateful to the Cote family for investing in students like me and helping make my dream of becoming a Registered Nurse possible.”

This scholarship was created over 30 years ago by the Cote family, who wanted to give back after the compassionate care their loved one received at Cary Medical Center. Their generosity continues to make a difference for nurses and patients across Aroostook County.

“The Cote family is pleased and proud to continue to offer this scholarship to nurses at Cary Medical Center for continuing education,” added Darylen Cote, wife of the late Alfred “Hap” Cote and daughter-in-law of Reuben and Annette. “Our family members have received excellent, compassionate care at this hospital and we see this scholarship as a way to both acknowledge that fact and honor our loved ones.”

“The Cote family has shown tremendous dedication to supporting local nurses through this scholarship,” said Chelsey Anderson, Executive Director of the Jefferson Cary Foundation. “Their continued generosity directly helps our nurses further their education and continue providing outstanding care to our community.”

Please join us in congratulating Matthew and thanking the Cote family for their lasting support of local healthcare!
