SANTO TOMÁS MORE (1478-1535)

SAINT THOMAS MORE (1478-1535)
June 22

Thomas was educated in one of the best schools in London at his time, and then moved on to Oxford for only two years, because of his lawyer-judge father’s insistence for him to become a lawyer. When he was ready for legal practice, he entertained thoughts of becoming a monk, joining the spiritual exercises of the Carthusians, whose monastery was close to where he lived. Although he was attracted to the Franciscan Order, he believed that he could serve God better as a lay Christian. In 1505, he married but his wife died after six years, leaving him with four children.

Throughout his life, Thomas engaged in prolonged prayer, fasting and abstinence, wearing of the hair shirt, and self-flagellation, keeping God as the center of his life. As a lawyer, he performed his civic duties and subsequently his political responsibilities competently. In 1529, King Henry VIII appointed him Lord Chancellor of England, but Thomas resigned a few years later as the king began to create schism in the church, purging clergymen supporting the Pope, and declared himself head of the Church. The next year, the king divorced his wife Catherine of Aragon and remarried Anne Boleyn. Because Thomas vehemently refused to denounce the Pope to recognize King Henry VIII as the head of the church, and to acknowledge the divorce, he was accused of false charges and imprisoned. After an unfair trial, he was decapitated. His words at his ex*****on were, ”I die the king's good servant, but God's first.”

More was beatified in 1886 and canonized in 1935 together with Cardinal John Fisher, who was also executed for the same reasons.

SAN JUAN FISHER (1469-1535)

SAINT JOHN FISHER (1469-1535)
June 22

John was born in Yorkshire, the oldest of four. When he was eight, his father died and his mother remarried and had five more children. He had a good education and at 23, he was given a dispensation to be ordained a priest. He became the confessor and spiritual adviser of the mother of King Henry VII, and convinced her to found two colleges in Cambridge to attract scholars and promote Latin, Greek, and Hebrew literary works. This being his main focus, John did not resort to the cloister like most saints; rather, he met with intellectuals and political leaders of his time. He preached against the abuses in the church, wrote eight books on heresy, and his penitential psalms were reprinted several times before his death, He also received a lifetime appointment as chancellor of the University of Cambridge. The young future King Henry VIII was one of his students. In 1504, a papal bull declared him bishop at the insistence of King Henry VII.

At the death of King Henry VII and his wife in 1509, conflicts began with the new king who started questioning the financing of Cambridge. Henry VIII started encroaching on the church, which led John along with two other bishops to appeal to the Holy See. The three bishops were arrested, after an edict prohibiting such appeals was released in their absence. When asked for his opinion on the annulment of King Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon, John directly and openly opposed it. For this and for defusing to acknowledge King Henry VIII as head of the church, John, already ill of health, was imprisoned and beheaded. He was beatified in 1886 and canonized in 1935.

Embodying Divine Grace
In a world that often demands we rely solely on our own strengths, we are reminded that grace builds beautifully upon our natural human limits. ✨ When we generously offer our unique blessings, talents, and even our shortfalls to the Divine, they are enhanced, sharpened, and multiplied far beyond our imagination. 🌟 Let go of the fear of not being enough, for it is in our moments of lack that a greater power steps in to build us up. 🛐 Embrace this reminder today and watch how your willingness to give becomes a profound source of blessing for everyone around you. 🙌

06/20/2026

Devoted Service
True service begins with complete surrender to God's grace, letting go of our own control to embrace His divine will. Just like the apostles before us, our mission is not about our own efforts, but allowing His power to move through our actions. Through this ultimate acts of submission, we find ourselves aligned with a purpose far greater than any we could create on our own. Let us carry this profound truth forward into the coming days, seeking to glorify Him in everything we do. 🙏🏼
