“My 78-Year-Old Boss Brought Me to a Park and Said, ‘Starting Today, You Don’t Work for Me Anymore.’ I Froze, Certain He Was Firing Me After Years of Devotion… Then He Offered to Let Me Stay on Just One Condition. His Words Made Me Leave in Tears.”
I had been working for Mr. Richard Bennett’s company for seven years.
When I got the job, I was twenty-four, had barely any experience, and was so anxious that my hands trembled during the interview.
Richard was already in his seventies at the time. Everyone at the company was somewhat afraid of him.
He never shouted. He never belittled anyone.
But a single glance over his glasses was enough to make you instantly question what you had done wrong.
As the years passed, I became his personal assistant.
I knew his appointment schedule, his clients’ names, and even which mornings were bad for bringing him complicated issues.
And strange as it sounds, I thought he trusted me.
Until the week when everything changed.
On Monday, he summoned me to his office.
“Emily, do you have anything planned after four on Friday?”
“No.”
“Then meet me downstairs.”
“Do we have an appointment?”
He glanced up at me.
“No. Only you and me.”
That seemed slightly odd.
But the following days made it even more unsettling.
On Tuesday, I noticed the accounting manager taking my personnel file into Richard’s office.
On Wednesday, Richard phoned the company attorney twice.
And on Thursday, when I walked into his office, I spotted a document on his desk with my full name across the top.
He quickly shut the folder.
“Not now,” he said.
“Not now what?”
“Tomorrow.”
I hardly slept that night. I was certain I was going to be fired.
The company’s income had fallen in recent months, several workers had already been dismissed, and I was the only one in my family earning a stable income.
My mother stayed with me. My younger brother was still studying. If I lost my position, I had no clue what I would do.
At four on Friday afternoon, Richard came downstairs. He wasn’t even wearing a tie.
“Come on.”
“Where are we going?”
“Somewhere nearby.”
Ten minutes afterward, we reached a quiet park. We approached a bench. Richard sat. I stayed on my feet.
“Have a seat, Emily.”
“Mr. Bennett, if you’re firing me, please just tell me.”
He stared at me without speaking for a moment.
Then he replied,
“All right. As of today, you don’t work for me anymore.”
My heart sank. Although I had anticipated those words, actually hearing them felt entirely different.
“May I ask why?”
“Because I’ve reached my decision.”
“Did I make a mistake?”
“No.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
He clasped his hands together.
“I can keep you at the company under only one condition.”
I looked at him at once. In that moment, my thoughts went to the darkest possible place. His tone was calm. Far too calm.
“What’s the condition?”
Richard stared straight into my eyes.
“If you choose to stay, beginning tomorrow, you’ll no longer work for me in exchange for a salary.”
For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand what he was saying.
“Pardon me?”
“You heard exactly what I said.”
“You expect me to work without pay?”
He gave no answer. That silence hurt more than anything else. Seven years.
I had worked late at the office more times than I could count. I had shown up even while sick.
I had rescued meetings, solved last-minute contract issues, and handled demanding clients for him.
And now he was saying I could remain only if I gave up my pay?
Tears welled in my eyes.
“I believed you were a different sort of man.”
Richard started to speak, but I cut him off.
“No. Please. Don’t say another word.”
