Ford's man was Jack Brabham, a former racer, while Dodge had Randy Lambert, known for his work on the Challenger's Hemi engine. Both were friends but fierce competitors, and both had strong opinions on which car reigned supreme. Jack had prepared a custom Mustang Boss 351 with a unique twist—a specially-tuned small-block engine pushing around 390 hp. Randy had prepped a Dodge Challenger R/T with a 426 Hemi engine capable of 425 hp, a beastly machine that few could handle.

The two decided to put their creations to the ultimate test in a single, no-holds-barred race at night. Word got around about the secret showdown, and a crowd gathered under the cover of darkness to witness the duel. As the cars lined up, both drivers revved their engines, sending chills through the crowd. The Mustang’s roar was sharp and aggressive, while the Challenger's Hemi produced a deep, thunderous rumble.

When the light turned green, both cars launched with incredible force, tires smoking as they tore down the strip. The Challenger took an early lead, but the Mustang held its ground. After the Daytona’s success, Plymouth demanded a car to match Dodge’s achievement. This led to the creation of the **Plymouth Superbird** in 1970, a modified version of the Plymouth Road Runner with similar aerodynamics, including the tall rear wing and pointed nosecone. The Superbird was specifically designed to bring **Richard Petty**, a legendary NASCAR driver who had switched to Ford due to Plymouth's lack of competitive cars, back to the Plymouth brand. The strategy worked, and Petty returned to Plymouth, piloting the Superbird with great success.

However, here's the lesser-known part of the story: **NASCAR wasn't happy** with the rapid innovation.
