In honor of the 250th birthday of our nation and the 80th Anniversary of Post 5221's legacy of service to the community; VFW Post 5221 is excited to announce the start of our campaign to honor your service and the legacy of your family's service.

We are accepting orders for memorial bricks to be built into a Memorial Wall in front of our Post at 568 Colorado Avenue in Calhan. Proceeds from this campaign will support building this wall veteran support programs and maintaining our facility.

This special opportunity is open to all veterans—VFW membership is not required. Families, friends, and supporters are warmly invited to honor their veterans by purchasing a memorial brick and becoming part of this meaningful community tribute.

Many choose to purchase a second brick as a cherished keepsake for their home or as a thoughtful way to honor a loved one.

On June 18, 2026, President Donald Trump presented the Medal of Honor to Major James Capers Jr., Colonel John Walter Ripley, and Major Nicholas Dockery during a White House ceremony recognizing acts of extraordinary heroism spanning nearly half a century of American military history.

Major Nicholas Dockery, U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor today.

Before becoming a Green Beret, Nicholas Dockery was a young Army platoon leader serving alongside Afghan and American forces in Afghanistan.

On October 2, 2012, then-Second Lieutenant Dockery repeatedly crossed open ground under intense enemy fire to rally his troops, reinforce isolated positions, and defend wounded soldiers. During the battle, he used his body to shield a fellow soldier from a gr***de blast and rescued an unconscious soldier who was being dragged away by enemy fighters, providing lifesaving aid while the fight continued around him.

The National Medal of Honor Museum will preserve and share his story so future generations can better understand the leadership, selflessness, and devotion to others that defined his actions that day.

Colonel John Walter Ripley was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor earlier today!

A life defined by service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to mission is being formally recognized for actions taken during the Vietnam War.

As a senior advisor to the 3rd Vietnamese Marine Corps Infantry Battalion near D**g Ha, South Vietnam, then-Captain Ripley faced a rapidly advancing North Vietnamese offensive in April 1972. Recognizing that a key bridge over the Cua Viet River had to be destroyed to slow the attack, he repeatedly climbed beneath the bridge while under continuous enemy fire to emplace hundreds of pounds of explosives.

Hanging from the bridge's steel girders for hours, Ripley positioned and prepared the charges before successfully destroying the span. His actions helped blunt the enemy advance and provided critical time for South Vietnamese forces to regroup and defend the region.

Known to generations of Marines as “Ripley at the Bridge,” his actions became an enduring example of courage, initiative, and selfless service.

Through the National Medal of Honor Museum, his story will continue to be preserved and shared for generations to come.
