“Thank you” just doesn’t feel like enough for everyone who has come to our assistance during these incredibly difficult times. ❤️

Every donation, every share, every like, and every comment helps us in more ways than you know. More than anything, it has been incredibly heartwarming to see just how many people believe in us, believe in our mission, and care about the horses who call our sanctuary home.

Right now, every dollar we raise is going directly toward **hay**.

We just purchased 4 bales—about 3,200 lbs of hay—for **$740**. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find some of the incredible hay deals we've found in the past, and buying a few bales at a time is becoming extremely expensive.

Our goal is to purchase a **semi load of hay for $8,500**. Buying in bulk would bring our cost down from roughly **$195 per bale to $145 per bale**, while also eliminating the need to make weekly trips to pick up hay. Most importantly, it would give us the security of knowing our horses have a dependable supply of hay heading into winter.

In the past, we've had people make comments that our personal lives and finances have nothing to do with the sanctuary. Unfortunately, when you are the people doing the daily work and helping financially support the sanctuary, the two simply cannot be completely separated.

The moment I got hurt, one of the first things that ran through my mind was, **“How badly is this going to impact the sanctuary?”**

I knew I wouldn't be able to train horses for income. I knew my husband would have to miss work to help with appointments, our children, and the physical work I suddenly couldn't do. I knew medical expenses would take money we normally put toward winter preparations. And despite all of that, our horses still needed exactly the same care they needed the day before I was injured.

**They still need to eat.
They still need their medications.
They still need their feet done.
They still need veterinary care.
They still depend on us every single day.**

That is why the support you've shown us means so much.

**A Broken Arm Has Put Our Sanctuary in a $24,000+ Hole Going Into Winter**

Asking for help is never easy, but right now our family and our sanctuary are facing something we simply could not have planned for.

I recently suffered a serious accident that left me with a **broken arm, torn ligaments, significant muscle damage, a dislocated elbow, and nerve damage.** I required surgery, and we are looking at months of recovery, extensive occupational and physical therapy, and potentially a second surgery going into next year.

Unfortunately, the impact of this injury goes far beyond the medical side of things.

I normally train horses to help financially support our family and allow us to continue putting our own money into the sanctuary. I average **two training horses per month at $1,000 each**. Being unable to train for an estimated four months means approximately **$8,000 in lost income** from training alone.

I am also unable to continue my house-cleaning work during my recovery, creating another loss of income.

My husband is now having to miss work to help with my appointments, our children, the animals, and everything I physically cannot do. When he misses work, he doesn't get paid.

Then there are the medical expenses.

With the amount of follow-up care, OT, PT and the possibility of another surgery extending into next year, we are facing the possibility of meeting our **$7,500 insurance deductible this year AND another $7,500 next year—$15,000 in medical expenses alone.**

That is money we would normally be able to put toward the sanctuary, especially our winter feed supply.

Altogether, between lost income, missed work and medical expenses, **we are estimating this accident will have a financial impact of more than $24,000 over the next several months.**

And it couldn't have happened at a more difficult time.

Winter is approaching, which is when our sanctuary expenses increase significantly. Our senior horses require more feed to maintain their weight and stay warm, and hay, grain, medications, farrier care and veterinary care don't stop because I got hurt.

Neither do the horses.

My husband and I are the sole caretakers of these animals. We have always personally contributed as much as we possibly can to the sanctuary, but this injury has taken away a significant portion of the income we depend on to do that.

**We aren't asking for help because we want to—we're asking because right now, we truly need it.**

Every dollar raised through this GoFundMe will help us bridge this unexpected financial gap so that my injury doesn't have to affect the level of care our sanctuary horses receive. It will help us continue purchasing winter hay and senior feed, paying for medications, farrier and veterinary care, and covering the everyday necessities that keep these horses healthy and comfortable.

These horses have already been through enough in their lives. Many came here because they were elderly, medically complicated, permanently unsound, or simply had nowhere else to go. When we promised them sanctuary, we promised them a safe home for the rest of their lives.

**A broken arm doesn't change that promise.**

Thank you so much to all our supporters who have went above and beyond. I've had meals brought out to us, barn cleaned help with chores and feeding horses, donations to help with our financial loss. Trying to do everything with just my left arm when in right handed had been a task but our support system has made things easier.

“You should be taking it easy, not out at the barn.”

“You’re not supposed to be lifting right now.”

“You need to relax and let your body heal.”

Yes. I agree with every single one of those statements. I know I need to rest, and I am trying to take care of myself and allow my body to heal.

But the reality is, these horses still depend on us.

My husband and I are the sole caretakers of our sanctuary horses. My injury didn’t make their needs disappear. Our seniors still need their grain and medications. Water still needs to be checked. Stalls and pens still need attention. Hay still has to be put out. Unfortunately, with my husband’s work schedule, feeding still falls on me much of the time.

My commitment to these horses means more to me than I can put into words. When we promised them a forever home, that promise didn’t come with an exception for when life gets hard.

So right now, I’m learning how to balance both—doing everything I can to protect my own healing while still making sure the animals who depend on me have everything they need.

Is it ideal? Absolutely not. Would I rather be resting and recovering? Of course. But sometimes commitment requires sacrifice.

These horses depend on us every single day, and until we can figure out some additional help while I recover, I’ll keep doing what I have to do—just a little slower, a little more carefully, and probably a lot more stubbornly. ❤️🐴

Houghton Healing & Therapy’s horses still need feed, medications, and farrier care every day, and I’m doing everything I can to keep their sanctuary running. While doing chores, I had a serious accident that left me with a fracture, a large wound with nerve damage, a dislocated elbow joint, and torn tendons. I have had surgery and potentially will be needing a second surgery.

I had to cancel horse’s coming in for training which was income I use for sanctuary expenses. My husband’s traveling job next week was also meant to help us prepare for winter hay, especially with prices rising and quality hay hard to find.

I did want to mention this go fund me is not for myself, I have medical insurance to pay for my medical bills, this is strictly to raise money for our sanctuary horses. These funds are used to bridge the gap for the loss of income we use for the sanctuary. I will not be able to take in training horses for a couple months and my husband is having to miss work and unfortunately does not get PTO or sick time so we are losing out on our income that is used to provide for the sanctuary horses. 100%of funds go to the horses and are tax deductible.
