Mental health challenges don’t always have a single cause.

For some, it’s the lingering effects of Hurricane Helene. For others, it’s caregiving, financial stress, relationship struggles, work pressures, grief, isolation, or simply the weight of everyday life.

In post-Helene surveys of Yancey and Mitchell County households, more than 40% of respondents reported experiencing anxiety. If that sounds familiar, know this: you are not alone.

Mountain Strong’s Free Mental Health Clinic is now open and providing no-cost counseling services to community members.

After Hurricane Helene, our community showed incredible resilience. Neighbors helped neighbors, volunteers showed up, and together we began rebuilding. But healing isn’t only physical.

Our community told us what they needed.
In post-storm community surveys, residents reported ongoing challenges with anxiety, depression, stress, and trouble sleeping. Healing takes time, and you do not have to do it alone. Whether you’re still struggling after the storm or simply need support navigating life’s challenges, we’re here to help.

Our services include:

• No cost individual counseling for adults and teens
• No cost group counseling opportunities
• In-person and telehealth options
• No referral required

We are deeply grateful to our funding partners, our Mental Health Director Meghan Graham, and the many volunteers, providers, board members, and community partners who helped make this program possible.

🚧 Recovery in Action: Ewing Lane / Ray Farm Road

“Mountain Strong helped alleviate the financial burden of repairs, restore safer access for families, and ensure emergency services could reach those in need.”

Weeks after Hurricane Helene, families along Ewing Lane and Ray Farm Road were still cut off from critical resources. Residents had already invested heavily in repairs, but needed help finishing the job.

Mountain Strong provided gravel and stabilization work that restored reliable access for 17 homes and approximately 40 residents.

More than a road repair, this project reconnected families to healthcare, emergency services, work, and daily life.

This is what recovery looks like: neighbors helping neighbors rebuild stronger than before.

Mountain Strong is pleased to announce the winners of the 2026 Move Mountains Scholarship! This year's recipients plan to pursue careers in healthcare, which aligns with one of Mountain Strong's four core pillars and with our commitment to rural healthcare access. Each recipient was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to support next steps in their education!

Congratulations to all graduating seniors from Yancey and Mitchell! We can't wait to see what the future holds for each of you!

A note on our selection process: All scholarship applications were reviewed and scored blindly by a panel of Mountain Strong board members, with applicants identified only by number. No reviewer had access to applicant names or personal details during scoring. Any reviewer with a known connection to an applicant was excluded from the process entirely. Our 2026 scholarship recipients were selected solely on their written statements and letters of recommendation, evaluated against a shared rubric that assessed elements including personal impact, clarity, originality, letter of recommendation strength, and overall application strength.
