Meet Jess Frost!

Behind every thriving community garden is a community of people working together to create lasting change.

This month, we’re welcoming Jess Frost, Green Guerillas’ Civic Engagement Coordinator and a member of the Council of Gardeners Steering Committee!

As a community organizer, Master Composter, and active member of Maple Street Community Garden, Jess brings her passion for environmental education, advocacy, and community action to help NYC gardeners build power and strengthen their neighborhoods.

Through her work with the Council of Gardeners, she helps connect gardeners with policymakers, amplify their voices, and advocate for the future of their gardens.

We’re excited to celebrate Jess and her commitment to building stronger communities, one garden at a time!

Seed Saving Workshop 2: From Plant to Seed

For our second Seed Saving Workshop, we took our learning into the garden!

We toured East New York Farms, where we explored the farm and identified multiple plants that were going to seed. Participants got a hands-on look at the different stages of the seed-saving process, learned how to recognize when plants and seeds are ready for collection, and gathered plant material to be dried and processed.

The tour gave us a chance to put what we learned during our first workshop into practice and continue conversations about seed saving, seed stewardship, and the importance of preserving seeds for our gardens and communities.

A huge thank you to Alexx, our workshop facilitator, for sharing their knowledge and guiding us through the farm, and to all the gardeners and community members who joined us, asked questions, and shared their own experiences.

Theater in the Garden

Join Green Guerillas and Lincoln Center Theater for a special afternoon celebrating youth voices, storytelling, community, and green space.

Featuring our Youth Empowerment Pipeline (YEP) interns, this special performance will give young people the opportunity to share stories in their own voices about their experiences working in community gardens, caring for neighborhood green spaces, and contributing to their communities.

Saturday, October 3 at La Padres Community Garden. The afternoon will include a performance by our YEP interns, along with light refreshments and a reception.

Come celebrate the creativity, perspectives, and experiences of our young people as they take the stage and share their stories with their families, gardeners, and community.

Meet Rachel Cecil, Green Guerillas Board Member!

Rachel brings 20 years of experience in partnerships and business development across nonprofit and for-profit organizations, with expertise spanning healthcare, international development, and digital media. She currently works as an independent business consultant and also supports nonprofits through the HBSCNY Community Partners program.

Her connection to growing things began in her childhood backyard garden, inspiring her appreciation for the access, empowerment, and conservation that community gardens and green spaces provide. We’re thrilled to have Rachel on our Board and grateful for the experience, perspective, and dedication she brings to Green Guerillas.

We kicked off our Seed Saving Workshop Series by digging into the foundations of seed saving and the bigger questions behind why it matters.

Together, we explored seed-saving terminology like open-pollinated, heirloom, hybrid, and isolation distance; discussed the importance and political history of saving seeds; and talked about seed saving in a changing climate.

Through readings, conversation, and examples of saved seeds, we began thinking about seeds as more than something we plant: they carry knowledge, history, culture, and possibilities for the future.

A huge thank you to Alexx, our workshop facilitator, for sharing their knowledge and creating space for thoughtful conversation! And thank you to all the gardeners and community members who joined us, asked questions, shared their experiences, and learned alongside one another.

Join us for our last and final workshop on September 28 from 4–6 PM at Friends of Brook Garden! We’ll bring everything we’ve learned together as we’re building a mini seed library toolkit that you can use to support seed saving in your garden and community.
