Green Guerillas

Green Guerillas We've been helping people turn vacant NYC lots into community gardens since 1973

Since 1973, Green Guerillas has created, protected, and supported New York City community gardens. Working alongside gardeners, youth, and local leaders, we advocate and educate to advance environmental and food justice and strengthen community-led green spaces across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.

Our hearts are full of gratitude after another inspiring day of community care and collective action.

Iraida de Jesus, steward of Jardin de la Familia , shared her appreciation for the incredible Green Guerillas youth and staff who showed up ready to work, build, and support the garden.

Community gardens thrive because of people who believe in growing more than food. They grow connection, resilience, and community.

Thank you to everyone who spent their day digging, planting, and giving back. Together, we’re helping community gardens flourish for generations to come.

Interested in getting involved? Join us at an upcoming volunteer day and help us grow greener, healthier communities across NYC.

Last Friday, Green Guerillas was proud to join Council Member Elsie Encarnación ’s staff and students from DREAM as we rolled up our sleeves at La Finca Del Sur Community Garden to help care for this vital community space.

Together, we weeded garden beds, refreshed compost, replenished the seed bank, and supported the ongoing work that keeps this beloved garden thriving.

Community gardens are more than green spaces, they are places where neighbors connect, cultures are celebrated, and fresh food systems take root.

Thank you to everyone who spent the day cultivating not just the garden, but a stronger, greener Bronx.

Meet Chantal from Bronx River Community Garden Co-Chair of the Green Guerillas Council of Gardeners Steering Committee.

For Chantal, community gardens are essential spaces where people can access fresh, high-quality produce, grow their own food, and harvest ingredients that nourish themselves and their families. They provide opportunities for communities to reconnect with the land, learn sustainable growing practices, and build food sovereignty right in their neighborhoods.

Community gardens do more than grow food, they cultivate healthier communities, stronger connections, and a more resilient future for all.

Hear Chantal’s story and learn why protecting and investing in community gardens matters.

Protect community gardens. Invest in healthy communities.

Community gardens are where green spaces become places of possibility.

Across New York City, community gardens provide more than fresh food and beautiful landscapes. They create opportunities for neighbors to connect, youth to develop leadership skills, families to access nature, and communities to build resilience in the face of environmental and social challenges.

These spaces are powered by dedicated gardeners, volunteers, and local leaders who invest their time and care into making neighborhoods healthier, safer, and more vibrant. But sustaining these community assets requires meaningful public support.

Investing in community gardens means investing in environmental stewardship, youth engagement, community wellness, and climate resilience. It means ensuring that every neighborhood has access to the green spaces that bring people together and strengthen the fabric of our city.

Together, let's continue to champion and invest in the gardens that nourish our communities, today and for future generations.

Community gardens are more than green spaces, they are places of healing, learning, food justice, and community connection.

We are grateful to Council Member Rita Joseph for standing with Green Guerillas and recognizing the value of the green spaces that serve our neighborhoods every day.

As cities continue to grow, we must protect and invest in the community gardens that make our communities healthier, greener, and more resilient.

Green spaces matter. Help us advocate for the funding and support needed to sustain community gardens for generations to come.

Throwback Thursday 🌱

Throwing it back to 2010 at Hattie Carthan Community Garden, a thriving green space rooted in care, culture, and community leadership.

Moments like this reflect how community gardens serve as vital spaces for growing food, gathering neighbors, and sustaining generations of knowledge and resilience.

Then and now, these gardens remain essential to the health of our communities. 💚

Looking back at this unforgettable 2010 Youth Tillers farm trip to McEnroe Farm reminds us that community gardening is about so much more than growing food. It’s about cultivating curiosity, leadership, environmental stewardship, and meaningful connections to the land and each other.

Experiences like these give young people the opportunity to learn where food comes from, build relationships across communities, and develop the skills and confidence to become the next generation of environmental leaders. Every seed planted, every harvest shared, and every lesson learned helps grow a stronger, greener future.

Here’s to the memories, the friendships, and the lasting impact of hands-on learning in nature.
