Green Guerillas We've been helping people turn vacant NYC lots into community gardens since 1973

Green Guerillas uses a unique mix of education, organizing, and advocacy to help people turn ordinary pieces of NYC land into colorful community gardens and bountiful urban farms that engage people, feed people, and connect city kids to the earth.

Every garden tells a story of community, resilience, and people coming together to care for one another. This June, we’re inviting you to be part of that story.

Join Green Guerillas for our June Open Volunteer Days across NYC as we build, plant, restore, and strengthen community green spaces that nourish neighborhoods and bring people together.

Whether you’re getting your hands in the soil for the first time or returning to the garden again, your presence makes a difference.

Together, we can create greener blocks, healthier communities, and spaces where people can truly thrive.

Come volunteer. Come connect. Come grow with us.

Throwing it back to the 2000s at Abib Newborn Community Garden, where collective workdays brought gardeners together to build, repair, and strengthen their space.

From assembling garden infrastructure to learning side by side, moments like these show how the spirit of community gardening continues to grow across generations.

Then and now, community is built together. 💚

Thank you to everyone who showed up in the rain for our Spring Distribution at Success Garden! 💚

We were able to distribute over 500 seedlings to community gardeners showing up for their gardens this season.

The seedlings went quickly, and we’re so grateful for the energy and support from everyone who attended!

As a reminder for our upcoming Bronx Community Garden Distribution, we are prioritizing community gardens that registered in advance, and registration is now officially closed.

Please arrive early and come prepared with the catalog sent to all registered gardens. Lines can get long, so we also recommend bringing a folding chair and water while you wait.

We’re excited to see everyone this Saturday for the Bronx distribution. Thank you all, and happy spring! 🌷

Our YEP interns recently joined for one of their Street Tree Care Clean Up events in Flatbush! 🌳💚 Alongside volunteers and community members, our youth helped care for local street trees and contribute to the beautification of the neighborhood.

Last year, some of our YEP interns and Summer Youth Tillers worked with Big Reuse on Parkside Ave to build tree guards along the block. This year, both returning and new interns got the chance to see how that work has continued to grow and make an impact in the community.

We’re excited to keep showing up for neighborhood cleanups and community care projects in the future! 🌱

A few weeks ago, during Earth Week, we hosted several volunteer days across NYC community gardens! 🌱

We spent time at La Finca del Sur Harlem Rose Garden and Five Star Garden helping prepare these spaces for the busy summer season ahead. Volunteers supported with weeding, soil preparation, building and painting outdoor furniture, and other garden care projects.

At Green Guerillas, Earth Day isn’t just something we celebrate in April, it’s part of our work every day. 💚 If getting outside, caring for green spaces, and supporting community gardens sounds like something you’d enjoy, be sure to check out our upcoming volunteer days in the link in our bio!

A look back to the 1970s, when neighbors came together to reclaim land and build something lasting with their own hands.

These early days of community gardening were rooted in mutual aid, creativity, and a shared belief that green space belongs to the people.

This is where the movement took shape, one board, one bed, one community at a time. 💚

The gardens that nourish our communities don’t grow alone, they grow because people like you show up.

Join us for Open Volunteer Days and be part of something bigger, caring for shared green spaces, supporting food justice, and building stronger neighborhoods across NYC.

Every seed planted, every bed cleaned, every hour volunteered helps keep community growing.

Step into community. Come volunteer with us. Link in Bio.

We were excited to join Bed-Stuy Works Alliance, and CM Chi Ossé at Quincy Senior Residences for a day of planting flowers, beautifying outdoor spaces, and bringing more color and care to the blocks of Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights.

Our team tabled at the event and participated alongside community members to celebrate and support greener, more vibrant neighborhoods. 🌱💚
