Meet this month’s Poets Corner lead poet Kai Diata Giovanni (Kai Diata Giovanni)🙌🏽

Kai Diata Giovanni is the 2025 New York City Youth Poet Laureate. An organizer, educator, and performer, Kai has shared their work locally, nationally and internationally as an artivist (artist-activist) for many years. Author of In Season, their work routinely explores race, rage, radical justice, and belonging.
Kai has collaborated with the Guggenheim Museum, the WNBA, TEDx, and more. They currently attend Howard University in Washington, D.C.

🔸Summer Shake on the Block🔹

This Friday, August 14th at 5PM
At ¡OYE! Group’s Multipurpose Space
214 Starr Street, 2-2, Brooklyn, NY 11237

This year they will be performing sonnets and monologues in a piece they named The Journey of the Tide🌊

All the pieces were inspired by William Shakespeare’s style, content, and his characters. The actors adapted their own pieces based on a monologue or sonnet structure. Join us in celebrating the magic of Shakespeare with a modern twist!

Led by the amazing teaching artists Megan Hamm Lucille Loren 🙌🏽

Ghetto Hors D’Oeuvres presents: 100 Years: The Black Liberation Experience

A three-night celebration of Black memory, Black power, and Black possibility.

Rooted in the legacy of Carter G. Woodson and the 100-year journey of Black History celebrations, this year’s GHD honors the artists, historians, organizers, elders, and everyday people who carried Black life forward. Inspired by figures like Arturo Schomburg, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, Gordon Parks, Kara Walker, Basquiat, and the voices from our own blocks, this festival asks: What do we remember? What do we reclaim? What do we reimagine?

Across three nights — REMEMBER!, RECLAIM!, and REIMAGINE! — poets, musicians, performers, and community voices come together in true GHD fashion: part performance, part classroom, part ceremony. We gather to honor where we’ve come from, celebrate how we’ve risen, and dream toward the next 100 years of Black freedom.
