Source MN is a resource center in South Minneapolis where many neighbors come for food, cooking classes, and even English classes.

When Operation Metro Surge began, many neighbors like Vanessa, a mother of three, lived in fear and were scared to leave their homes to pick up food. Many began to ask if food delivery was an option during this time.

Source MN pivoted their approach and made deliveries an option. Many neighbors like Vanessa share their gratitude for Source MN, for adapting in difficult times.

Open Cupboard's Today's Harvest markets offer a unique approach to food shelves that serve neighbors in need. Through Retail Rescue, these markets work with local grocery stores to redirect safe, edible food away from landfills and onto the tables of households that need support. These food shelves have the feel of a traditional market, giving shoppers different choices of quality foods.

“Retail Rescue allows us to offer beautiful, fresh food and gives shoppers a choice among products," says Open Cupboard's Strategic Partnerships and Projects Director April Rog. "Our high-access, low-barrier model means our doors are open wide—no appointments, no intake process, just a welcoming space where anyone can come when it works for them.

There is much to learn from the 337 residents of Medicine Lake, Minnesota. Over the last 6 years, the Medicine Lake Community Club has raised and donated money to Second Harvest Heartland through virtual fundraisers and community challenges.
Over time, "Medicine Lake Cares!" has become a tradition residents look forward to.

In March, employees of Huntington National Bank gathered at the University of Minnesota in the Huntington Bank Stadium to sort and pack 4,000 emergency boxes of shelf-stable food to be distributed to the community by Second Harvest Heartland and The Sanneh Foundation.

As Minnesota’s hunger-relief network continues to see unprecedented demand, the generosity of the public and corporate partners like Huntington Bank plays a vital role in bringing hope, comfort, and stability to those in need of a meal.

On the last day of the 2026 legislative session—which featured the most closely divided legislature in state history—Sophie and Lexi, members of the Second Harvest Heartland public affairs team, remained in close communications with lawmakers at the state Capitol as budget and policy bills made their way through the process, with several passing just before midnight.

Their tireless efforts, combined with more than 8,200 messages to the Governor and lawmakers from Second Harvest Heartland hunger-relief advocates and advocacy from Minnesota’s other food banks and our food shelf partners, helped secure more support for neighbors facing food insecurity during a challenging legislative session where many issues were left unaddressed.

Last week, Second Harvest Heartland packed food boxes on the Capitol lawn for our second annual “Pack the Capitol” event. Joined by hunger relief organizations like Channel One Regional Food Bank and PROP - People Reaching Out to People Food Shelf as well as lawmakers and their staff, our volunteers helped pack more than 800 food boxes to raise awareness about the acute need for state investment in food banks and food shelves amid record demand.

Discussing the state of hunger in Minnesota, Rick, one of our selfless volunteers, said it best: “A lot of legislators need to know what’s happening in our state.”

We’re thankful to those legislators at the Capitol who have continued to show up and lend their support, including our bipartisan bill authors Sen. Liz Boldon (DFL-25) and Rep. Steve Gander (R-01B), and Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson (R-01), Sen. Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger (DFL-47), Sen. Aric Putnam (DFL-14), Rep. Andrew Myers (R-45A), and Rep. Cal Warwas (R-07B). All of them highlighted how we can only end hunger by working together.

With just a few days left in the 2026 legislative session, we need your help to end hunger too! By taking a moment to message your lawmakers right now to ask for their support for hunger-relief funding, you’ll help ensure that the 1 in 5 Minnesota families who cannot afford groceries remain top of mind.
