Throwback Thursday
Because Bodie’s rocky soil was not suited for agriculture, teams of horses and mules were needed to bring food, wood, and as shown in this photo, hay for animals in Bodie. This team of 10 is pulling two wagons south on Main Street under the watchful eye of one man on horseback. Hay and other agriculture products were grown at nearby farms and ranches in California and Nevada. This team appears to have come into Bodie from the north, perhaps from a ranch down canyon. Notice the bells on the lead horses, which notify those sharing the road that the team is approaching.

No date is given, but power poles are visible, indicating that it is sometime after 1910 when Bodie began receiving electric power from the Jordan power plant near Lundy Canyon.

Throwback Thursday
Harry F. Dolan was laid to rest in the town of his birth on Sunday, Nov. 1, 1936 at a funeral attended by members of his family and his many friends.

Harry, born in Bodie Sept. 29, 1890, was the son of James S. and Mary Dolan. He married the former Alice McDonell, also of Bodie, on his birthday, Sept. 29, 1915. They had two daughters, Patricia and Marjorie.

The Bridgeport Chronicle-Union reported: “Harry Dolan was a man beloved and respected by all who knew him, this fact being best attested by the large number of those who gathered from far and near to pay their last tribute of love and respect to his memory.”

Harry had been in ill health for several months, but his death was unexpected, according to the newspaper article. He had worked as an electrician for the City of Los Angeles for over 10 years at the Cottonwood Power Plant near Lone Pine.

The Rev. Father John Crowley traveled from Bishop for the service. He administered the last rites and also conducted the high mass and funeral rites at the Miners’ Union Hall. Father Crowley was said to have “paid a very glowing tribute” to Harry’s memory. Many readers know that the reservoir in the south end of Mono County was named after Father Crowley following his death in an auto accident.

After the service, the casket was taken to the Bodie Cemetery and Harry F. Dolan was laid to rest “beside the members of his family who had preceded hm to that Better Land.”

His father, James, was a native of Ireland and his mother, Mary, was born in Michigan. They came to Bodie at the start of the boom years, and his father worked as a miner. The couple had 12 children. Harry’s brothers, James P. Dolan and Albert (Bert) Dolan both served as Mono County Sheriffs.

Throwback Thursday....as we mark the return of our weekly throwbacks let's throwback all the way to this past Saturday, what a memorable day! From Faro in the IOOF, to the amazing voice of Cece Otto, to all of the descendants who came out to share their family pictures and stories and finally to Jerry and Debbie Rosse with their wagon and mules and Rick Stillwell with his 1920 Model T Delivery Wagon. We are already looking forward to next year.... mark your calendars; August 7, 2027.
