Hope Gathering

Hope Gathering Hope Gathering exists to help widows find hope and healing in Christ-centered communities.

We do this through our Hope Boxes, monthly gatherings and our annual Weekend of Hope. We believe that no widow should have to travel this journey of grief alone.

We do not always get to choose our circumstances, and some seasons bring grief, loss, and challenges we never would have chosen.

But even in difficult places, there is still an opportunity to respond with faith, perseverance, and trust in God’s presence. Our circumstances may shape part of the story, but they do not have the final word.

Mental Health Awareness Month may be coming to an end, but we understand firsthand as widows that healing is a process and journey. 🌿 The loss of a loved one affects your mental health in unimaginable ways, and normal events and decisions are lost in the fog of uncertainty and pain.

With God, there is still HOPE. We have experienced the power of Christ-centered community and Christian counseling, which are not only helpful but extremely beneficial for your emotional and spiritual well-being. Our desire is to offer recommendations, resources, and advice that have benefited us in our own journeys to help other widows find hope and healing.

Below and in the images are a few resources we highly recommend, including our Hope Gathering Communities, support groups through GriefShare, counseling consultations and referrals through Focus on the Family, and lists of regional Christian counselors that can be provided by Hope Gathering Community leaders.

"Anticipating that grief may be with us as we celebrate means we won't get caught off guard. And understanding grief can be part of milestone moments reassures us it's normal. No matter how long it's been, we'll miss our spouse even in the best celebrations of life. It's okay to both celebrate with joy and miss the one we'd love to celebrate with." - Lisa Appelo

As you walk through this season of ceremonies, graduations, parties, and upcoming summer holidays, we understand that the feelings of both joy and sorrow will always hold hands this side of eternity. Our hope is that you have community to surround and encourage you in these moments.

We invite you to view our list of Hope Gathering Communities across the United States and in Canada, where you will journey with other widows who truly understand. If there is not a group currently meeting in your area, connect with us at 📧 [email protected] to discuss starting a group. You were not made to walk this journey or navigate these seasons alone.

We are grateful today and everyday for the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Their lives are forever remembered, respected, and honored. 🇺🇸

Our hearts are with the military widows and their families that are walking their journeys of grief. We pray you feel seen and loved and are surrounded by community and support today.

We encourage you to take time this Memorial Day to reflect on the sacrifice of our military heroes, and we recommend reading this heartfelt tribute written by a military widow about her husband at https://lisaappelo.com/when-you-honor-memorial-day-as-a-marine-widow/. As a guest writer on our friend Lisa Appelo's blog, Kelli Campbell remembers and honors her late husband, Shawn, and his courage and service in the Marine Corps. We believe you will be encouraged by her family's story of faith and the hope they have found in the Lord and His faithfulness.

Last night was such a beautiful beginning as we gathered for the very first Hope Gathering Community in Nebraska! 🌿

Widows from the North Platte area came together over a delicious dinner to connect, share their stories, and spend time with others who truly understand the pain of loss and the journey through grief. There was so much warmth, compassion, and hope in the room.

A heartfelt thank you to Harvest Christian Fellowship for graciously hosting us, and to every person who helped make this night possible. Your kindness is helping widows begin building meaningful friendships and finding hope and healing together.

If you or someone you know lives in the North Platte area and couldn’t attend the launch event, we would love to connect with you! 📧 Email our team at [email protected] to learn more about this new community of support and friendship. 💛

"...Each item you included felt intentional, but the handwritten note from a fellow widow especially touched me. There is something sacred about being reminded that I’m not alone in this kind of loss, even when it feels that way.

Thank you for creating something so meaningful for women walking through deep sorrow. Your compassion is not only felt — it matters more than you know. You are bringing light into very dark places.

With sincere gratitude, Anna"

These heartfelt words from Anna reflect the numerous messages from widows across the United States who have received the gift of a Hope Box. 🎁 You can share the same hope and reminder that someone cares by requesting a Hope Box for a widow in your life. If you are a widow, we also warmly welcome you to request a box for yourself. Hope Boxes are provided at no cost to widows due to the generous hearts of our donors.

We are deeply grateful for the Arizona Hope Group leaders and every person who helped make this special gathering possible.

If you or someone you know is a widow in the area and would like to learn more about one of our groups, 📧 email our team at [email protected] for details.

This time of year is filled with award ceremonies, graduations, and other celebrations — reminding a widow and her family once again that joy and sorrow will always hold hands this side of eternity.

Do you have a child graduating and entering into their next season of life without their father? We invite you to listen to this podcast episode by Raising Fatherless Children with Lori Apon. Lori has been a dear friend of Hope Gathering. She is the founder of Perspective Ministries and has walked the road of widowhood and raising her children as a single mom. Her podcast has spoken truth and wisdom to countless widow moms navigating their own journeys.

"In this deeply moving episode of Raising Fatherless Kids, Lori Apon opens her heart to single moms navigating the emotional terrain of graduation season. As school years wrap up and caps and gowns are prepared, Lori reminds moms that milestones like high school graduation often stir unexpected grief for fatherless children — grief that may have been buried or long thought resolved."

We pray you take time in this busy season to be encouraged by this podcast and Lori's words and insights.
