I just voted by mail in the March 5th Texas Democratic Primary. And the post office has stamped my carrier envelope with my marked ballot inside. Congratulations to all the great Democrats who stepped forwarded to represent our values.

If you are 65+ years old like I am (or if you have a limiting disability or will be out of your county during early voting and on March 5th), you can vote by mail too. You must first send in an Application for Ballot By Mail (ABBM); it must be received by your county’s Early Voting Clerk by Feb 23rd. Then your county Elections Clerk will send you a ballot to be mailed back to them, per instructions and deadlines.

“HAVE YOU MADE YOURSELF USEFUL TODAY?”

I just finished watching “Rustin” on Netflix. It’s the story of Bayard Rustin, the architect, planner, organizer, and executioner of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. You know the one; the one where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “ I Have A Dream” speech.

SPOILER ALERT: At the end of the movie, Dr. Anna Hedgeman, one of Bayard’s key assistants, asked Bayard the aforementioned question. The movie ends with Bayard dunning a satchel and picking up trash, while the leaders of the major civil rights organizations head to the White House.

If you haven’t seen the movie, you should. Definitely the best movie I’ve seen in decades.

The 2023 Thomye Delle "Celebrate Our Seniors" program is in the books. This was the 20th annual program in which we have celebrated our senior citizens for their years of support, mentorship, leadership, and guidance. This year, there were basically four phases to the weekend program of activities:
-- recognizing and honoring Claudette Stewart and Arthur McBride Sr for their unheralded contributions to Washington County senior citizens (completed Aug 11)
-- delivering senior care packages to senior citizens in private residences and skilled care facilities (completed Aug 11-12)
-- honoring the donors, supporters, and volunteers who make this program possible and successful (completed Aug 12)
-- honoring the inspiration for and namesake of the program, Thomye Delle Jameson-Ferguson-Burnett (completed Aug 13).

Attached are selected photos from these events. For a full accounting of program activities, please visit the Celebrate Our Citizens website at https://www.celebrateourseniors.com/.

In August the “Thomye Delle Celebrate Our Seniors” program will commemorate 20 years of service to the citizens of Brenham and Washington County. In recognition of this significant milestone, the program has already begun to honor and engage with senior citizens in area nursing homes. The first such activity involved senior citizens at Brenham Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, February 15, 2023.

In cooperation with the youth ministry at Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Brenham, the program reconstituted the “Hattie Lee Franklin-Maxie Bingo Challenge” by bringing it to the senior citizens. Founder Veronica Maxie says, "We are building a bridge between our seniors and youth by celebrating throughout the year and we are thankful to the youth from Mt. Rose for volunteering, and we welcome other youth and churches who want to help."

Similar bingo challenges will be held at High Hope Skilled Care Center in April and at Argent Court Assisted Living Center in June. Usually, the bingo challenge is held during the annual program in August.

These and other planned activities are in addition to an expanded program on Saturday, August 12, 2023 in which care packages will again be delivered to senior citizens in nursing homes and private residences. Program volunteers and sponsors will also be recognized on that day.

The “Thomye Delle Celebrate Our Seniors” program is only possible because of generous tax-deductible contributions from individuals, churches, companies, and organizations. Co-founder Tre Maxie says, "We are humbled by the incredible support from the community that has enabled us to celebrate our seniors for 20 years."

If you would like to support the program, please contact Veronica Maxie at (979) 830-5555, or by email at [email protected], or via mail at Thomye Delle Celebrate Our Seniors, 2628 Hwy 36S #244, Brenham Texas 77833.

Additional program information is available on the program’s website at www.celebrateourseniors.com.

Happy Born Day to my Grannie Hattie Lee! I was lucky to know both the women who gave birth to my parents and she is also part of my inspiration for the Celebrate Our Seniors, the bingo challenge is named after her, because anybody who knew her knows that she loved bingo and was a woman of many talents!
