The Bradford WindowDressers workshop Nov 18th-26th is taking orders now!

Few actions an individual Vermonter can take to combat climate change have more impact than home weatherization. Perhaps the most EFFECTIVE, EASILY ACHIEVED and MONEY-SAVING action available is to insulate your home’s windows. Owners and renters alike can lower heating costs and enjoy a more comfortable living space by participating in the WindowDressers Program. This non-profit engages local groups throughout New England every Fall to stage Community Builds at which re-useable interior window inserts are made to order. All customers, supplemented by community volunteers, donate their labor during the pop-up workshop to produce several hundred insulating panels for themselves and their neighbors. Consequently, the price is low (averaging approximately $45 per window, depending on its size). Most important, it is possible to get insulating panels for up to ten windows at no cost for households where money is a barrier. Inserts can be used year after year. Money for subsidies is thanks to donations made to WindowDressers.

This year, the Bradford WindowDresser Community Build will be held from November 18-26th. We are taking orders from Bradford and surrounding towns. To get on board, follow these easy steps:

1. Go to https://windowdressers.org/sign-up-for-inserts/ and fill out an online form with contact information and the number of transparent interior inserts you wish to order. Do it soon! You will be contacted to set up a measuring appointment.

The Climate and Energy Commission's mission is to promote actions in Bradford that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs for the town, its residents, and its businesses.

Solar power just made history in the US. For the first time ever, solar generated more electricity than coal across the entire country in a single month. Solar supplied 12.8% of America's electricity while coal slipped to 12.2%, according to energy think tank Ember.

Just five years ago, coal made up nearly 20% of the power mix and solar barely touched 5%. Now solar has flipped the script completely, becoming the third biggest electricity source in the US, right behind natural gas and nuclear.

What makes this even bigger is the timing. This shift happened even as the government pushed hundreds of millions of dollars to support coal plants. Cheaper costs and a massive boom in new solar installations across states like Texas and California are driving the change, and experts say this record could be broken again soon.

A small number on paper, but a huge moment for clean energy.

Volunteer opportunity
The Bradford Window Dresser group is putting out a call for more members. Our team runs the annual Bradford WindowDresser community workshop, which will be returning to the Bradford Fire Station Classroom this Fall. The week-long workshop is attended by customers and volunteers from Bradford and surrounding towns. We make "WindowDresser" insulating window inserts following procedures invented and supported by the WindowDressers non-profit organization of Maine. There are five key roles our local team fills: Overall Coordination, Volunteer/Food coordination, Measuring windows,/ completing orders, Outreach (advertising both for customers and volunteers for the current season's workshop) and Shift Supervision. If you are interested in bringing your talents to the team, there is room to contribute in any of these areas. You may take on full responsibility or be guided by an existing member, whichever suits your intentions. The work can be quite fulfilling, because it makes a concrete contribution to toward increasing winter comfort, saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We are a part of the Bradford Climate and Energy Commission, but you needn't live in Bradford to participate. We collaborate with other WindowDresser groups in the area and encourage you to apply to one of these if preferable (the full list of local community builds is at https://windowdressers.org/community-workshops/).
