"Many hands make short work!" Kiwanis of Boyne City did its annual cabin clean-up yesterday, and brought our logo sign to be installed on the Nature Cabin, which is the cabin we sponsor at Camp Daggett.

Happy World Book Day! Charlevoix Kiwanis Youth Foundation is a partner with the Dollywood Foundation to provide the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to children in Charlevoix County age birth to 5! Literacy is so important, and this program is amazing! Recent research has found that just after 10 books, children that are in this program are at least four times more likely to demonstrate stronger literacy skills, such as vocabulary and phonological awareness compared to children not in the program. It also found, children enrolled were nine times more likely to be read to four or more days per week. If you have a child in Charlevoix County that is not enrolled, think about getting them registered! Today was the 10th grade Eddie Essay Banquet where essayists were awarded money to give to the charity they chose to write about. There were some amazing essays and interesting readings! We also honored our annual senior scholarship award winners at this event. Here are some highlights!

This morning was the first of our two Eddie Essay Banquets to honor award winning essays in our 21st annual Eddie Essay Competition, where students wrote about the question, "If I had $100 to give to a local charitable organization that helps people; who would it be and why?" This gives students the opportunity to think about what organizations help in our community, especially those that helped them or their family, interact with that organization, and gift them with a contribution they have earned with their skilled writing. Students read their essays at the banquet, these essays are usually very emotional. They then are acknowledged, and given a check to present to their charity. Here are some photos that were taken at this meaningful event.

Kiwanians are so proud to have had a big role in welcoming home our Olympic Gold Medal winner, Kaila Kuhn! We sponsored the posters all over town along with Berkshire Hathaway and O'Brien real estate. We had free hot chocolate downtown for the welcome parade, sponsored with Meijer, and Kiwanians were present at the meet and greet! It's a great day to be a Kiwanian in Boyne City, Michigan!
