Home listings are down. Prices are up. And the pressure on workers and employers is growing.

Between June 2019 and June 2025, active home listings in Massachusetts fell 36.8%, while median sale prices climbed from $440,000 to $725,000.

This isn’t just a market trend; it’s a challenge that’s shaping affordability, talent retention, and economic growth across the Commonwealth.

The Chamber’s Supercharging Housing Production report breaks down what’s driving these shifts. New analysis from the Massachusetts-Taxpayers-Foundation points to the same conclusion: production needs to keep up.

In partnership with MTF, this event brings the data to life through dynamic presentations and a panel featuring Secretary Juana B. Matias, Arnold Ventures’ Jenny Schuetz, and MTF President Doug Howgate, highlighting key housing trends, existing tools, and policy options to boost production.

So what will it take to move forward?

Last week, a new article from Boston Globe Media features the Chamber’s statewide housing report, “Supercharging Housing Production: Policies & Practices that Promote Housing Development, Attract Businesses, and Retain Talent.”

The article highlights many of the Chamber’s policy recommendations to increase housing production and keep residents from leaving for competitor states. Chamber President & CEO Jim Rooney underscores what’s at stake if the housing crisis goes unaddressed:

“Young people are saying they might leave and ... it’s always housing that people point to,” Rooney said. “We need to elevate our game.”
