HAPPY 86th BIRTHDAY to The Legendary JOE HIGGS, The Father of Reggae Music! 🔥🎶🇯🇲
Born in 1940 in Kingston, Jamaica, and shaped by the spirit, struggle and genius of Trench Town, Joe Higgs was already a famous singer, songwriter and performer in ska and rocksteady before reggae was created. He would later become a musical architect, helping to create the Reggae Sound and teaching it to generations of artists.
Joe Higgs was also an informal music teacher. A mentor. A cultural philosopher. A man whose voice, discipline and vision helped give reggae its sound, its soul and its consciousness.
Before reggae music was born, Joe Higgs made history with Roy Wilson as Higgs & Wilson. Their 1958 ska record, “Oh Manny Oh,” holds a landmark place in Jamaican music history as the first pressed record in Jamaica. Produced by Edward Seaga, who would later become Prime Minister of Jamaica, the track went on to sell more than 50,000 copies. The single was pressed at Seaga’s newly established West Indies Records Ltd., also known as WIRL. That historic recording helped open the door for a Jamaican music industry that would carry Jamaica’s voice across the world.
Before the world knew reggae as a global language of resistance, love, liberation and truth, Joe Higgs helped build its foundation. As part of Higgs & Wilson, he helped shape early Jamaican popular music. As a solo artist, his music carried depth, struggle and spiritual conviction. But perhaps one of his greatest contributions was the gift he gave freely: he taught others who would carry reggae music to the highest heights.
In Trench Town, and years later in Los Angeles, California, Joe Higgs taught, trained and guided generations of artists. He taught the architecture of the Reggae Sound, music methods, singing techniques, harmony, breath control, phrasing, timing, discipline, stagecraft and sound consciousness.
Among those he helped shape in Trench Town were Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, The Wailing Souls, Jimmy Cliff and many others. These legendary artists would carry reggae to the world! Joe Higgs did not only help create and sing reggae music, he helped prepare the voices that made reggae immortal.
Today, in his homes of Jamaica and Los Angeles, California, and across the globe, we honor a legend whose name shines as a beacon of light in reggae music history.
Joe Higgs as the Father of Reggae, helped birth more than a genre. He birthed a movement. He helped create a sound that gave voice to the poor, the oppressed, the hopeful, the faithful and the FREE.
On this 86th Earthstrong, we celebrate his life, his music, his teachings and his undeniable contribution to world culture.
Today, The Annual TRIBUTE to JOE HIGGS will take place in Kingston, Jamaica, at Inna de Yard, 6 St. Andrew Park, presented by Earl “Chinna” Smith’s Binghistra Movement and The Joe Higgs Foundation, and virtually around the world.
