This month, ESP welcomed partner organizations to join students, staff and families at the Blackstone Back to School Bash and the Hurley Back to School Picnic to share resources and build community ahead of a new year of youth programming. Music, food and partner sponsored activities created a celebratory mood as families collected swag and learned about the varied enrichment offerings at their schools. Thank you to Boston Music Project, Community Music Center of Boston, Soccer Unity Project, the Children’s Room, Boston Public Schools, Boston Public Library, Urbanity Dance, Chess Wizards, Hill House Boston, DICK'S Sporting Goods, Buildwave, Minni Art, Friends of Blackstone School, and Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School for making these events a success!

ESP kicked off the school year with new partner Dicks House of Sport, inviting Blackstone Elementary families to trade homework for climbing harnesses at the Prudential Center flagship store during a back-to-school Pep Rally just for them! Kids tested their nerves on the climbing wall, took their best swings in the simulator, and personalized their water bottles while House of Sport added to the fun with raffle prizes and soccer ball donations for the school. Thank you Dicks House of Sport for your community support, The Blackstone Elementary School for turning out and Friends of Blackstone Schools for rallying alongside the ESP team during the event. Here's to a school year full of new heights!

Hurley students are processing the loss of their beloved instructor, Que, with the help of music therapy led by our partner, Community Music Center of Boston. CMCB instructor Hannah Johnson worked with students in grades 1-3 this spring to create a meaningful song that captured their feelings of loss while celebrating the strength and joy Que brought to their work. Every student deserves therapeutic support when they need it most and ESP Boston is deeply grateful to CMCB for supporting this healing process through their partnership at the Hurley. It was a fitting tribute for a passionate teacher we all will miss.

ESP partnered with 826 Boston to facilitate a storytelling workshop for the Ohrenberger School's SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) cohort this spring. English Language Learners in grades 4–7 traveled to 826 Boston's Roxbury headquarters where they drew on their feelings and personal experiences to craft a story about immigration. Each student created their own unique ending and 826 Boston delivered the published books back to the classroom, proving every voice matters. SLIFE social worker Melissa Quinones called it "a highly impactful and deeply transformative experience for all involved." This year, ESP partnered with the Blackstone School to create more inclusive experiences for students with disabilities. Thanks to our incredible partners at Community Music Center of Boston, a new weekly music therapy program was launched to foster students’ communication, connection, and self-expression. These classes, led by CMCB faculty member A.J. Gaudreau, have been described by Blackstone staff as, “the best part of the week”!
ESP is also grateful to the City of Boston and its Boston Small Community Grant program for helping us fund an inclusive sensory sand table, ensuring more students can fully participate in the joy of play at the Blackstone. The ESP Team was grateful for the invitation to present to over 100 attendees at the Mayor's Office of Youth Engagement and Advancement May Partner Network Meeting. It was a wonderful morning of creating opportunities and community-building with other youth-serving organizations from around the city. Special thank you to OYEA Executive Director Pedro Cruz for supporting the ESP mission and fostering these connections on behalf of young people in Boston.

Thank you to our supporters, school leaders & partner organizations who joined us at the 2026 Uplift Celebration on April 9th! It was a wonderful night of connection and community, highlighting the learning experiences that level the playing field for students in Boston. Congrats to our Supporter of the Year Genesis Inspiration Foundation, our Partner of the Year Boston Music Project & our special youth performers, Deurick Gomes & Will Divine!

This month, ESP had the pleasure of partnering with Castle of Our Skins (https://www.castleskins.org/)to offer two educational performances showcasing Black history and music. Students at the Blackstone School were treated to an interactive musical journey by violist, Ashleigh Gordon (https://www.castleskins.org/artists/ashleigh-gordon), highlighting important figures in Black history. Students at the Hurley School were entranced by DeShaun Gordon-King (https://www.castleskins.org/artists/deshaun-gordon-king-(d%C3%ADj%C3%AD-kay)) and Steph Davis (https://www.castleskins.org/artists/steph-davis) as they experienced musical meditations and the work of Black composers performed on the flute, marimba, and gyil. Castle of our Skins, a Black arts institution dedicated to fostering cultural curiosity and celebrating Black artistry through music, will soon be moving into a new location in the South End. ESP looks forward to future collaboration with this impactful organization at our nearby partner schools!
