This month, ESP had the pleasure of partnering with Castle of Our Skins (https://www.castleskins.org/)to offer two educational performances showcasing Black history and music. Students at the Blackstone School were treated to an interactive musical journey by violist, Ashleigh Gordon (https://www.castleskins.org/artists/ashleigh-gordon), highlighting important figures in Black history. Students at the Hurley School were entranced by DeShaun Gordon-King (https://www.castleskins.org/artists/deshaun-gordon-king-(d%C3%ADj%C3%AD-kay)) and Steph Davis (https://www.castleskins.org/artists/steph-davis) as they experienced musical meditations and the work of Black composers performed on the flute, marimba, and gyil. Castle of our Skins, a Black arts institution dedicated to fostering cultural curiosity and celebrating Black artistry through music, will soon be moving into a new location in the South End. ESP looks forward to future collaboration with this impactful organization at our nearby partner schools!

Water should be fun not feared. But drowning is the #1 killer (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/08/health/children-drowning-deaths.html) of young children and a parent who has never learned to swim results in an 87% chance that their child won’t either. Swimming proficiency is not equal across racial and economic demographics, disproportionately impacting urban populations, children of color, and those living in poverty. A history of scarcity and exclusivity has fueled this phenomenon and still pervades swimming culture. For this reason, we consider free swimming lessons to be one of our most important initiatives at ESP.

Thanks to the Mayor’s SwimSafe Grant and the YMCA of Greater Boston, ESP can continue offering free swimming programs at four public elementary schools this year. Over the past five years, these cherished partnerships have brought the joy of swimming to more than 500 children in Boston.
