Geraldine F Lavin Memorial Scholarship Fund

Geraldine F Lavin Memorial Scholarship Fund For Suffolk University Sawyer Business School students Whose Lives Have Been Impacted By Breast Cancer, and Their Supporters.

Our Scholarship was established by three Suffolk University Sawyer School MPA students on Cape Cod, one of whom is a breast cancer survivor. The scholarship honors Deanie and her family's courage throughout her 7-year battle against breast cancer. It also recognizes her husband, Professor Mike Lavin for his 40-year commitment to his students and alumni, and his willingness to teach and provide aca

demic and career advice, even after his retirement, until his death in March 2020. Their sons are both Sawyer alumni, as are all members of the Board of Directors. For twenty-five years, alumni, friends, family, colleagues and others have financially supported the Geraldine F. Lavin Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides an annual scholarship to a Suffolk University Sawyer Business School student whose life has been impacted by breast cancer. Thanks to many of you, we now offer a $2,500 Scholarship each year! We ask you to consider contributing to the Lavin Memorial Fund to help support another student next year! JEFF COLBY OF CAPE COD HAS BEEN AWARDED THE $2,500 GERALDINE F. LAVIN BREAST CANCER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD AT SUFFOLK UNIVERSITY FOR SPRING 2026!

He will complete his Master of Public Administration Program at Suffolk University Sawyer Business School's Institute for Public Service in May.

Jeff, a retired Army Logistics officer and currently Director of Public Works in Yarmouth, served in the same role in Chatham, where he lives with his family. He was recently named Public Works Leader of the Year by the New England Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

Scholarship recipients are selected by a Sawyer School Alumni Board of Directors based on a 300-word statement describing how their lives have been impacted by breast cancer personally or in their immediate family.

Mr. Colby noted that he had witnessed the effects of breast cancer in both family members and friends, as well as its effects on their caregivers.

He commented that, as a resident of Barnstable County, he has closely followed with concern the research of the Silent Spring Institute, which investigates potential environmental factors contributing to Cape Cod’s elevated cancer rates.

The Board sends him many congratulations for this award and for his contributions of public service throughout his career.
