Today in history 🗓
9 October 2020: Hurricane Delta was the fourth named tropical cyclone of 2020 to make landfall in Louisiana, tying a record number for that state in one year. This hurricane, which had earlier been a category 4 hurricane, made landfall as a category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph and a minimum central pressure of 970 mb (28.64 in Hg).

The landfall was near Creole, LA, which is approximately 12 miles east of where Hurricane Laura had six weeks earlier. Damage from Delta in the United States was determined to be $2.9 billion.

Today in history 🗓
8 October 1871: Prolonged drought and desiccating southwest winds led to the Great Chicago Fire, where 200 died as fires destroyed 17,000 buildings and to the Peshtigo (WI) fire that killed more than 2500 people in northeastern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, making it the nation’s deadliest fire.
