We're giving a talk Sunday (10am, Salon D) on the Emergence of Maitreya, the World Teacher & His group the Masters of Wisdom—mankind's Elder Brothers (not religious figures)—and the new civilization they're inspiring humanity to create (today's chaos are its birth pangs). An uplifting and inspiring story happening Now. Come see us!

In order to develop spiritually we need to cultivate good habits and good ways. If we live in the world and want to realize God we first need to think about our way of life. If we do not have good qualities we should try to change ourselves and adopt good behaviour. This is most essential. I do not mean that you should simply act – you should really make these qualities part of your personality and character. We, ourselves, should remove the dirt within us and adopt positive, good characteristics.

What are these characteristics? Firstly we should not sin. What is a sin? To start with, the words that come out of our mouths should not hurt others. We should not condemn or criticize others. Don’t gossip or fight with others. It is better not to eat meat and thereby cause suffering to other beings. Instead of listing these wrongs one by one, sages and saints have said generally, “Do not sin.” If we mature ourselves with all these nice qualities, our habits and behaviour change. Then you can see that transformation in the face. There will be a bright radiance there. That illumination will put you on the way to real spirituality. Whatever happens, you will always be in bliss. You will not be affected by anything because the mind will always be steady. If you keep such steadiness permanently in your mind then only will you go to a higher state.

Healing of the mind gradually takes place if you are with nature, with that orange on the tree and the blade of grass that pushes through cement, with the hills hidden by the clouds. —Krishnamurti

Context: We never seem to have a feeling for all living things on the earth. If we could establish a deep abiding relationship with nature, we would never kill an animal for our appetite, we would never harm a monkey, dog or guinea pig for our benefit. We would find other ways to heal our wounds and our bodies. The healing of the mind is something totally different, which gradually takes place if you are with nature, with that orange on the tree, and the blade of grass that pushes through cement, with the hills hidden by the clouds. This is not sentiment or romantic imagination but the reality of a relationship with everything that lives and moves on the earth. Man has killed millions of whales and is still killing them. All that we derive from their slaughter can be had through other means. But apparently man loves to kill things, the fleeting deer, the marvellous gazelle and the great elephant. And we love to kill each other. This killing of other human beings has not stopped throughout the history of man’s life on this earth. If we could, and we must, establish a deep long abiding relationship with nature, with the actual trees, bushes, flowers, grass and the fast moving clouds, we would never slaughter another human being for any reason whatsoever. Organised murder is war, and though we demonstrate against a particular war, we have never demonstrated against war itself. We have never said that to kill another human being is the greatest sin on earth.

Questioner: Is the purpose for living just to be able to cope with existence?

Krishnamurti: You say, 'Is this the purpose of living?' - but why do you want a purpose for living? - live. Living is its own purpose; why do you want a purpose? Look: each one has his own purpose, the religious man his purpose, the scientist his purpose, the family man his purpose and so on, all dividing. The life of a man who has a purpose is breeding violence. It is so clear and simple.
